On this GPS, a diagram is laid out for you with flashing arrows that tell you where you need to go.

Another feature include is "IQ routes". These routes calculate road data for the quickest route you need to make it to your destination. If you are driving and there is heavy traffic, this GPS will guide you to the nearest roads that have less traffic. It is a great feature and you do not have to rely on the speed limit.

The TomTom XL 340-S has its own software built in. It is easy to connect it to a personal computer of a Macintosh. The software will automatically install itself onto your computer and will allow you to add updates, add maps, and plan routes. It is even possible to add different voices.

For example, you can add the legendary voice of Mr. T if you want to for just $13. If you have a huge ego, you can choose to add user created voices to the GPS and add your vocals.

The TomTom XL 340-S provides tutorials for different features and additional bonuses like the emergency help service. You will be able to plan your itinerary and make map correction to things like street names, addresses, and points of interest. This GPS really is rather cool.

Unfortunately, XL 340-S GPS is not able to support real time traffic data or Bluetooth. You would have to purchase a separate receiver. This GPS is definitely worth the price though. You will be assured of never getting lost again, unless you are trapped on Mars or something similar. The XL 340-S won't be able to show you how to return to Earth. It's good, but not that good! The TomTom XL 340-S includes North American maps with over 7,000,000 points of interest indicated. You will likely never have a chance to visit all of these places, but better safe than sorry.

In closing, this GPS device has more advantages than disadvantages. If you want to get stranded on fantasy island and find your way home, get this GPS! If you care about Bluetooth or real time traffic data then this is not the right choice for you. The TomTom XL 340-S is successful for a reason. One of the best GPS devices on the market. One thing that was never mentioned, who names their GPS TomTom? Seriously, Tom Tom Club is a good name for a music group but for a GPS? The world will never know

The GPS system is fantastic and as a professional driver I can atest that my sat nav unit has probably saved my days worth of hours when making deliveries to customers. The need for the old paper maps and hundreds of street planners is something of the past (thankfully).

Being able to switch on the gps unit and although you have to wait for it to pick up a satelite signal it is well worth the wait. With maps being updated and whole countries if not continents worth of road maps available at the touch of the screen, it is much easier to operate than dozens of maps that maybe out of date.

We all know the usefulness of a sat nav unit espcially if your going to a new location or if your 'lost' in a town or area that you don't know to well just plug it in, switch it on, and tell it to take you home, in seconds you have a fully mapped out route with details and travelling time to get you there. It will even show you a few short cuts you never knew existed depending on the planning settings you make in the devices menu.

With the voices most of which can be annoying but thankfully changeable via downloads, it is like you have company guiding you to your planned destination. I normally disable the voice personally as the default ones annoy me and the downloadable ones lose appeal very quickly.

With most Garmin sat nav units it is also possible to program the unit for the vehicle your in i.e a car or even an articulated lorry, this functionality is important to prevent a lorry going places it shouldn't be on the grounds it's to high or to heavy for the roads.

When a route is planned and set into the gps unit it is also possible to get the estimated travelling time, so you can work out when to leave to get somewhere at a specifc time, or even call ahead and tell the person your visiting 'I will be there at ..... ' knowing you won't get lost and the timing is accurate. The travelling is is worked out by knowing the speed limits of the roads onroute and multiplying by how far you must travel on the road, this is correct if you stick to the speed limit, if however you don't adhere to the speed limit the timing will adjust automatically.

A Global Positioning System or GPS is a technological innovation that uses a number of satellites in the earth’s orbit, to transmit signals back to earth enabling GPS receivers to calculate and identify the exact location, time information and speed to the user. The GPS receivers can be able to pinpoint the person’s location at anytime using signals from either three or more satellites. Originally, the GPS was created by the US Department of Defense to be used for military purposes. Though the system started being used in the 1980’s it became available to public use in the 1990’s. The main advantage of the GPS is that it can be able to function even in all weather condition any time, day or night.

The working of the GPS is very simple. The Global Positioning System is made up of 27satellites that are orbiting the Earth. Out of the 27 satellites, only 24 are in use while the rest are used in case any satellite malfunctions. All the satellites are able to circles the earth at speeds of 12,000 miles and make two complete rotations daily. The satellites have been arranged in such a way to enable at least four satellites to be visible in any location on the planet. The receiver’s task is to locate any four or more of the satellites, calculate the distance to each satellite and then use the information acquired to calculate its own location. The GPS receiver uses a mathematical principle referred to as trilateration to be able to pinpoint the exact location of the object.

A simple explanation of how the GPS is able to effectively locate the position of a person is as follows. Assume that the exact positions of the satellites to the earth can be computed accurately, and that the GPS receiver is able to calculate the distance, between at least three satellites simultaneously and the receiver. By making use of the longitude, latitude and height to define the location of the receiver, one can come up with and solve three equations relating to the known coordinates of the three satellites and that of the receiver. The distance between the receiver and the satellites is calculated by time signals that are transmitted by the three satellites. Since the signal normally travels at the speed of light, the time the signal from the satellites reaches the GPS receiver is accurately registered to be able to calculate the distance as well as the accurate position of the receiver.

GPS receivers operate using clocks that are less accurate while the satellites use accurate atomic clocks. Because of this, there is a timing error when the GPS receiver gets the satellite signals. Since the signals arriving to the receiver from the three satellites are measured simultaneously, the distance measurements are falsified by the receiver’s clock error. Therefore, to accurately measure the position of the receiver, four unknowns are required namely; the three satellite coordinates and the receivers clock error. To solve the four unknowns at least four satellites are required. The use of four satellites allows the GPS to determine the location with a pinpoint accuracy. With the four satellites, the receiver can now be able to calculate accurate estimates of the receiver’s clock and its location. The functioning of the Global Positioning System may sound quite complicated but it is simple if followed keenly.

You now have GPS for cars, hikers, bikers, boats etc. But the most common models are car models.

What will you seek on a car GPS?

Maps and updates are the heart of a good GPS. In some countries, places and road names change every time a new regime comes to power. You don't want to set foot in those places without and up-to-date map.

Have you got good eyes? If you not, I advise you to stay away from mobile phone GPS models. These often run on ridiculously small displays. And in any case most of these gadgets don't even come with a mounting arm for your car.

Points of interest have become a standard feature on most new GPS models. What are they? Well they are what they claim to be: points of interest. That is anything that may be of interest to you in your journey: museums, cinemas, theatres etc.

What to Know About Magellan Car GPS Navigation Systems

I'll be honest with you. Magellan car GPS navigation systems don't get enough written about them from reviewers like me. With Garmin controlling almost 50% of the market share, and Tom Tom rapidly catching up with very aggressive pricing, sometimes Magellan gets lost in the dust.

But Magellan's products are definitely worth considering when buying a GPS navigation system.

Magellan was one of the first companies to pioneer car GPS navigation. They offer an excellent range of products with some features that other companies such as Garmin and Tom Tom do not offer.

They don't have as many models as Garmin, especially in the high end of the market, but what Magellan does have is really top notch.

If you're in the market for a car GPS navigation system, then Magellan is something definitely to consider.

Let's take a brief overview of their product line.

There are essentially three lines of Magellan's car GPS navigation systems--the Maestro line, the RoadMate line and the Magellan Crossover. We'll look at each of these three.

The Maestro line is Magellan's more fully-featured models of car GPS systems.

The Maestro 3100 is their entry level unit in the Maestro line. It's currently selling for about $150, and has all the features you would expect of an entry level unit. It can tell you where you are on an electronic map and give you voice instructions how to get where you're going. It also comes with a large database of pre-programmed destinations, called Points of Interest, or POI's.

At the other end of the price spectrum is the Maestro 4250, which sells currently for about $250. The Maestro 4250 is, to my mind, one of the best deals on the market. Besides doing everything a mid-priced GPS should do, Magellan has a deal with AAA where they have their Tour Book directly on the GPS device. This is for AAA members only, but what a great feature!

The 4250 also has a larger display than the 3100.

If you're looking for a big screen, however, you might want to think about the Maestro 5310, which has a 5-inch screen. (All these dimensions are measured on the diagonal.) The 5310 is a newer model and currently sells for slightly more than $300.

If you just want basic navigation and are looking for a cheaper system, you might want to consider Magellan's RoadMate line. The RoadMates are billed as being "budget" models, but they still have a lot of features. You can get the RoadMate 1200 for less than $120! Or you can go for the more feature-laden RoadMate 1412, which is currently selling for around $200, and has the larger screen.

Of special interest to active people should be the Magellan CrossoverGPS. The CrossoverGPS is the only GPS navigation system on the market that is designed for use in the car as well as for hiking or biking. It's small enough to easily fit in your pocket, yet has enough power to do everything you need a GPS to do.

Right now the CrossoverGPS is selling for about $220. If you're interested in on and off road flexibility, then the CrossoverGPS really needs to be on your list!

There are certainly more Magellan car GPS navigation systems than I've mentioned. But this article will at least give you a good overview.

I'm not saying that Garmin and Tom Tom are not good companies and don't make great products. I like both of those companies! All I'm saying is that you definitely should include Magellan in your list of possibilities when you buy your next GPS.

As with all new technology, there are people who love the TomTom One XL, others who hate it, and still others who have both good and bad things to say about it. When you start looking at the various GPS models in the attempt to find the one you want to buy, it's easy to be confused by all of this conflicting information. However, if you read carefully, examining both sides of the issue should ultimately help you make a smart decision.

The TomTom One XL could arguably be called the best GPS available for the price. However, when you get down to brass tacks about it, you'll find that it isn't all that much different from other Tomtom One units. About the only change that was made is in the size of the display screen. While the other models had 3.5" screens, the XL is equipped with a large, 4.3" screen which makes the display easier to see. You'll have to ask yourself, though, if the additional screen space is really worth the higher price you'll have to pay to get it.

You might be tempted by name brand products, such as Garmin and Sony, or by the many fancy gadgets you can get with many of the other GPS models. This is one instance, however, when fancier isn't always better. There's such a thing as buying a unit that's more complex to operate than what you really want to learn how to do. In addition, why pay extra for features that you don't really need? For example, you can buy pricier models that have Bluetooth integration for hands free operation of your phone. However, if you don't have a Bluetooth-compatible phone, you'll either have to buy one (more cost!) or not use the feature anyway.

Tom Tom is reputed as having the best customer service that is available. Hopefully you won't find a need to contact customer service, but if you should have to, it's nice knowing that a company has one you can rely on. They also offer an excellent website where you can easily access a lot of additional information. Many users have reported, however, that the One XL is so simple to use that they haven't even needed to refer to the product manual.

Some of the other good points about the TomTom One XL include:

* Screen is easy to see both day and night

* Maps are accurate and up-to-date

* It recalculates quickly

* Tomtom traffic provides up-to-the-minute information about road conditions

For course, the Tom Tom One XL isn't perfect, no matter how many good features it may possess, and you need to know about its negatives in order to make smart decisions. Some of the complaints about the system have included:

* No text-to-speech function

* Does not adjust to light automatically

* Doesn't turn on/off when the car does; has to be operated manually

* It's hard to keep the volume stable

* The unit is too heavy for the mount, so it pops off when driving on bumpy roads

I've bought a few GPS units in my time, and I've borrowed others. They fascinate me, so I tend to talk about them with people any chance I get. What I've learned is that my discount Garmin nuvi 760 GPS has the best of everything: great navigation and cool extras. It's the best GPS I've ever owned.

Everyone knows that the most important part of a GPS is its navigation and maps. This has never been a problem with the Garmins I've owned. They use Navteq maps, which are easily the best maps on the market today. I've used units with other maps, and while they've never led me too far astray, I was always worried that they would.

A great map will only get you so far if you don't know where you are. Garmins use SiRF chips, which are the most powerful and advanced chips available. The individual components of each SiRF chip make it more sensitive to GPS satellite signals and better able to translate and transfer those signals through the GPS. The SiRF chip, combined with the Navteq maps, are what make the discount Garmin nuvi 760 one of the best units around in terms of navigational capabilities.

Programming the 760 is easy. The large screen makes it easy to see, and you have the option of choosing a QWERTY keyboard or an ABC one. Whatever your choice, recording your points of interest (POIs) is easy. The nuvi 760 actually allows you to program as many as 50 POIs at once. You can then put them in any order you want or have the unit determine the most efficient route.

My favorite feature on my nuvi 760 is the 'Where Am I?' capability. When I park my car, I can tell the GPS to note its location. Then I grab my Garmin and go shopping or to the movies. When it's time to leave, I just ask the GPS where the car is and it leads me right to it.

A related feature is the 'Where Am I?' button. I can press this button any time, and the unit will tell me my current address, my longitude and latitude, and the nearest intersection. It's a really handy button. I don't know when it is actually necessary to know your latitude and longitude, but it is a pretty cool function.

My nuvi 760 is also compatible with my Bluetooth. I uploaded all of my phone numbers and contacts into my GPS, and it allows me to have hands-free capabilities while I'm driving. It also lets me hear my phone through my car speakers, which is great when I am in heavy traffic.

The people at Garmin have done even more smart things with the nuvi 760. The traffic antenna is integrated into the unit, meaning you don't have to flip it up for it to work. They have also integrated the FM antenna into the power cord, which means I don't have another cord running across my dash.

The nuvi 760 is great at helping you avoid traffic tie-ups. It knows when they are coming and attempts to route you around them. If you do get stuck, it will tell you how long the delay is expected to last. The screen also displays the speed limit when it knows it, which is most of the time on main roads. These features just make your drive easier.

Obviously, I like my discount Garmin nuvi 760 GPS. It has even more great features than I've mentioned here, but these are the ones I find most helpful and use most often. As I said before, you can't beat Garmin's navigation. And with all of the great extras they've included in this unit, you won't go wrong by getting one for yourself.

Have you had the heart sinking feeling of opening up the mail and finding a traffic ticket, with a $100, $250, $375 fine or higher? Yet you were never pulled over by a policeman - so how did you get this violation? Are your insurance rates going to go up?

The ticket has a picture of the back of your vehicle with the license plate clearly visible. You have been caught by an automated red light camera or speed camera system. Cities across the country are installing these systems to free up officers, catch all violators regardless of time of day, and hopefully cause drivers to be more careful.

As a professional truck driver, limousine driver or delivery driver - your earnings are diminished by traffic fines. Even the typical driver can't ignore the possibility of getting a ticket and then having to fight the traffic ticket, or pay the fines and risk your insurance rates going up.

A growing solution is to use your GPS as a traffic camera warning system. First, how does a red light camera system work? The city pays for cameras or speed detectors to be installed at intersection or road locations where many traffic violations take place. Cameras, sensors and lights are installed so that when a vehicle drives too fast, or runs the red light, the lights flash and the cameras capture the vehicle making a violation. No officer intervention is needed. The license plate is read by the computers and through vehicle registration databases a ticket is issued and sent to your home.

So why not use a radar detector? First, many states have made radar defectors and jammers illegal. Second, most radar detectors can't detect red light cameras since they are not sending out a signal like a radar gun.

Your GPS is the answer. There is a feature on every GPS called POI, or Points of Interest. A POI database holds locations of any address or location of places you may want to be acknowledged about. For example, a relative's home, or a hotel, restaurant, or park. You can add that location to a POI database so that when you approach the location, the GPS will beep as you approach and display what the location is. Whenever you save an address that you want the GPS to give you directions to reach, that location becomes a Point of Interest (POI).

You can load a database of POI into your GPS and have it signal when you approach any of those locations. So companies are now providing many POI databases for red light camera locations, speed camera locations, and others. This works for any GPS - Garmin, Tom Tom, Magellan and others.

Is this legal? Yes, and most police departments endorse the use of GPS POI databases of red light cameras and speed camera locations. The departments goal is to have vehicles slow down and be careful through those locations. Your GPS is not a radar detector, it does not jam any signals. Since you have it in your car, why not turn it on and have it warn you of any upcoming speed traps or intersections with traffic cameras?

Here is what you should look for in obtaining a POI database for your GPS. You want a database that has the largest number of locations in the database. Hundreds of cameras are being added across the country daily. One firm has over 140,000 locations in their database already. If you have less than 10,000, you're not doing yourself much good.

You also want the database to be easily downloaded to your particular brand of GPS. Make sure the provider has their POI database formatted for your brand. Some have a generic database that takes a few steps of reformatting for your brand. It is easiest to have a database already formatted for your particular GPS brand.

You want the database updated often. While you may not upload the POI locations everyday, you want a provider to be updating the database every day. That way when you do choose to refresh your database, you are getting the latest locations known.

Lastly, you want to be able to upload your database as often as possible. People who drive for a living may want to refresh their database daily. Some providers limit the number of times you can refresh your database in a set time period.

Costs can vary for the database. While some are free, in general, those tend to be the smallest amount of locations and hardest to load. You can buy a monthly subscription, yearly, or the best bet seems to be the lifetime subscriptions. For $99, a lifetime subscription can allow you download the speed light cameras locations onto your GPS anytime. They tend to have the most locations and are usually formatted for the major GPS brands - making it the simplest and fastest method of updating your GPS POI database. If you think $99 is expensive, think how much just one camera ticket violation will cost. Avoiding just one ticket will pay for your lifetime subscription itself.

You can reduce the chances of getting an expensive traffic ticket from red light camera and speed camera locations by using your GPS. It is legal and makes better drivers of us all.

Other features include a 400 MHz CPU and a 20 GB hard drive which are perfect for saving maps for particular routes you might need to save, the ability to connect and then integrate your iPod, a Bluetooth enabled remote for hands free operation, and a 4" touchscreen with over 64,000 colors. The 910 is also one of the first GPS systems which has a POI (Point of Interest) database which makes special note any and all points of interest such as hotels, hospitals, stadiums, parks and the like. And with 36 different languages either preinstalled or easily downloaded, this GPS system can be used in most major Westernised countries with little difficulty.

The user can program this little GPS to call out directions in your language - no matter where you are. However, some users have complained that the 910 GO has a rather outdated POI database - a database that has been known to make special notes for places of interest which no longer exist. Some reviewers have complained that for some routes, the estimated time of arrival can be off by a noticeable degree, especially if you're somewhat familiar with the routes your 910 will suggest. A few other users have also complained that the 910 doesn't have the updated traffic information they'd need. Some other reviews have complained that the dash mount was terribly flimsy and that the screen can be difficult to read in sunlight. Another user complained that changing menu functions took more tapping and scrolling than what they liked. Although the unit is has a priced competitively, it does have many of the basic features that novice GPS users will love - with some minor problems. Plus, users will be pleased to see several new goodies added - including a new and enhanced traffic information option that updates and recalculates routes every 5 minutes or so, a light sensor which optimizes the viewing screen, 4 GB of internal flash memory, an SD memory card slot, along with the features users loved in the 910. But most importantly, the 920 is the first of TomTom's GPS units to offer voice recognition programming so that drivers could enter in their destinations by simply talking to the machine. Already, many users have praised this development. After all, it makes it much easier for driver's to program the device without having to take their eyes off the road to program the unit much unlike other units in which drivers needed a companion to help program the GPS while the driver was actually driving. The 920 was also the first GPS system to offer the ability to pre-plan and save trips, as well as the first to offer a built-in FM transmitter.

Also, the 920 offers the TomTom Map Share feature in which TomTom users can update maps and routes for each other - in the event of new construction, a new building development or so on. Some users have complained that they wish they could shut off the bossy-sounding GPS voice which shouts out directions. Apparently, the voice is quite annoying while you're sitting in bumper to bumper traffic as it tells you that your turn is half a mile ahead! There have been reports of users complaining about how the weather and traffic services don't seem to work with some Verizon and Sprint cellular hand sets. And the most common complaint in the countless reports we've seen is that despite the usefulness of the voice recognition program, users frequently get frustrated when it doesn't recognize certain sounds as well as it should, forcing users to go back to typing in their addresses for directions. Potential buyers will be feel their wallets lighten when they buy the 920 but they'll be paying for one of the most accurate and simplest GPS systems on the market. TomTom Go 930

TomTom 930

The 930 GPS system has many of the same features of TomTom's previous models but thanks to a great redesign looks much like the iPhone and the iPod Touch and the remote control's design has been changed to match. The power switch has been moved to the top, making it easier for users to turn the device off and on and the speaker and external antennae jack have been moved to the rear. Some new additions include a newly developed technology known as Active Lane Guidance which gives exacting detail for drivers who are driving on complex, multi-lane highways, Interstates and the like who need to know how many lanes they might need to cross over to get to their exit, which way their particular lane goes and so on. A simple series of icons show the lanes and points out which lanes drivers need to be in to make proper turns and the like.

This feature has worked very well on major highways and streets but unfortunately not on more rural, country roads which can be quite frustrating if you're making trips in the country. Another new technology includes a program known as Static Intersection Images which is designed to show where highways and intersections intersect; assisting drivers in simplifying complicated driving directions. TomTom has made it easier for users to type in addresses as you can switch from a touch screen QWERTY-style keyboard, an ABC-style keyboard and an option for left handed users.

However, in a few reviews, users have complained that the imaging process involved in the program works intermittently at best. One reviewer complained that the imaging process generally seemed to work somewhere in the half mile to quarter mile range which simply isn't acceptable if you're driving at highway speeds. The IQ Routes programming has been greatly updated, so that it gives much more accurate estimations on arrival times. Users of the 910 and 920 frequently complained about how estimated driving times were usually off by at least 20%, IQ Routes now will also allow you to plan out routes several days in advance, figuring out traditional traffic flow history and giving you a fairly accurate estimate time based on traffic flow. Also, there's the updated RDSTMC traffic receiver which works via cellular phone transmissions for much more accurate traffic readings.

The flimsy dash mount of the 910 and 920 have been replaced with a much sturdier dash mount. Some reviewers have complained that the 930's voice recognition doesn't work too well, and many have resorted to just typing in their destinations instead. Other reviews have complained about the amount of glare which comes from the shinier touchscreen. And we have even come across reviews in which users have complained about the number of screens and options one has to go through in order to change menu preferences. Certainly, that's frustrating but for the most part users have loved the 930 and its accurate positioning capabilities, and any complaints such as screen glare are subjective to the individual user. TomTom Go 940

TomTom 940

The 940 GO GPS system is will be among the most technologically advanced GPS units out in the market. TomTom's engineers have further updated their IQ Route programming so that every route will be determined by historical time travel information for every road for every single day of the week while continuously adapting to changing road conditions to constantly give drivers the fastest, most economically sound routes possible. Setting itself apart from the other GPS units on the market, the 940 will have up to the minute weather and traffic updates - and those are useful for just about any driver out there. But what the new 940 GPS unit will have that no other unit will have yet is a local search connection through Google. Users can find local pizzerias, seafood restaurants or anything they'd wish and they could easily find it and get directions. Of course, there are the other programs which TomTom users love to use. The tech savvy user will love the new 940 GO!

All of TomToms devices despite their different technological developments come equipped with a car charger which you plug in through the built-in cigarette lighter, a desktop mount for home charging and uploads and the customary instruction manual. And they all proudly boast the fact that they're incredibly easy to install and set up.

When it comes to making that decision on purchasing a GPS system from TomTom or any other manufacturer, we suggest that you do your research and consider what sort of programs and capabilities you need while weighing the pros and cons of each device and each manufacturer. If you feel you're not great with technology, don't worry about it! In fact, most people aren't that great when it comes to new things but when it comes to GPS systems, most of them are user friendly.

Looking at the friendliness - The first thing we want to look at is how friendly this GPS is for you. I would go to a local electronic store and test out the GPS units they have on display. Play with the buttons, ask questions and see which one you like. You won't want to get one that's complicated if you're not familiar with them. When you find one you like, don't buy it just yet because you'll want to research the price online before you actually buy it.

Check out the options - The more you pay, the more options you're going to get. For example, a $400 unit is going to come with many options like voice recognition, traffic details, gas prices in your area and more. If you only spend around $100, you're not going to get any of this. The question you want to ask yourself is if you want all of these options.

The screen size - You wouldn't think the screen size is an important factor but it really is. If you're getting older and have bad eyesight, you're going to want to check out the screen while driving. You wouldn't want to squint while driving or look up close; this is just calling for disaster! Always make sure you get a device that has a screen that's good to view.

GPS Tracking Saves Client a Small Fortune - Before He Even Buys

It's no secret that GPS Tracking systems for commercial and government organizations is my thing. The number one most common turn down I would get when I used to sell these systems is, "we have no money". In today's economy, maybe you don't have even a dollar extra in the budget. But what if I told you how the first step in planning for a GPS Tracking system might save you a huge amount of money and cost you noting, except the effort of asking people to do their jobs?

A few years ago when I used to work for the US government I got assigned a task that I suspect no one else wanted. Our work was providing support for some large US Air Force organizations world-wide. In its most common definition "support" usually translates into "money", and like most government organizations no matter how much we had, lean years or fat, there never seemed to be enough.

Long story short I got the task of justifying, finding funding for and installing a GPS Tracking system on this organization's fleet. The justification was easy from a number of security, safety and operational reasons. And from the most important one ... the boss wanted it done.

In order to find out how steep a hill I had to climb to satisfy the funding part of the task, it seemed my first task was to find out how many vehicles were in the fleet. Turned out that wasn't as easy as it should be, but eventually I came up with a reasonably believable number of 2100 +/- (Can you imagine a government organization not knowing what they own? believe me it is more common than you think). There was no way I was going to be able to find the funds for a project of that scope in one year, so I tasked the people in charge of the three locations where these 2100 vehicles "lived", about 700 each, to give me a list of their top 100 each. The boss always wanted to do things in a manageable "pilot program" fashion anyway, and I knew I could beg, borrow or steal enough for 300 or so systems.

Well you would have thought I had asked them all to marry their daughters, sell me their first born sons and solve Rubik's Cube puzzles behind their back, blindfolded. Directives from the "front office" are never popular, but the hue and cry this one raised was beyond belief. In only an hour or two the hue and cry had reached be "big boss's" office and my phone range, summoning me to the carpet in front of the "man" ASAP.

Off I went, puzzled over what I had done wrong and how much trouble I was in. But when I got in front of the desk, I got a warm greeting, a smile and an invitation to sit. With a sigh of relief I sat and was surprised to hear our three star general, the "CEO", break into laughter.

"Dave", he began, "Do you know why you stirred up such a hornet's nest"?

I allowed that I really didn't and the boss's reaction surprised me no end.

"This just proved to me what I have suspected for years,' the boss explained. "These guys in the field don't really know what they have." The boss followed with a directive to prepare a letter from him to the complainers, with a lot of specific directives abut information he wanted on his desk in two week's time.

Well the letter got sent ... to this day some people still hate me for that project ... but the results that came back? Mind blowing.

Across the 2100 vehicle fleet a total of nearly 300 vehicles were declared surplus and sent to other government or charitable organizations. More that 25 vehicles were found to have not existed for years, and dozens were identified as having been carried with the wrong identifying information for ages ... sedans indented as cargo trucks, snow plows identified as golf course maintenance vehicles, etc.

I really hesitate to say what was saved by this one "comprehensive, do it now!" report, but it's easy to prove it totaled up to over a million dollars in just one year's cost. Many millions more in the out years. Not bad for a little whining and criticism I feel. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to stir up that "nest". It saved all of us, as US taxpayers, a small fortune. And with the vehicle inventory under control, we were able to equip the "right candidates" with a highly effective GPS tracking system that became a very effective tool in saving even more money.
