TomTom GPS Reciever Revolutionizes the Way the World Looks at GPS Receivers

One question, you may ask yourself, why do you need the TomTom GPS receiver. Isn't the wired GPS, which you have been using all this time, good enough? To begin with, one hurdle, we all face is with the placing of the wired GPS devices; the device may kick start at record time, and may also find the network automatically, which most devices, though automatic, fail to do without a manual search, but the wired GPS needs to be placed under the open sky. This becomes a real problem when you are on a roadtrip. The dash board of your car may heat up, get dusty, or a pain not to have enough space to lodge the device. Trying to place the device on the floor of the car makes the network go awry. So the only way you can make your wired GPS device function, is by placing it right under the open sky, even if that means having to stop your vehicle every few miles.Sometimes you may even have to stick your device out of the window of a moving car, to catch the signal. Also the wire may not be long enough for such antics. In that case you are reallytoast!

The TomTom GPS receiver puts an end to all these woes. All you have to do is turn on your PDA, activate the Bluetooth, and switch the receiver on. This kickstart the GPS

navigation system. You can choose program with which you want to run the receiver. The Tom Tom GPS receiver is compatible with other programs as well, and not just TomTom. To fix a target, enter the address you are looking for, and place the receiver on the dashboard of your car. And this is not all. You can move this receiver anywhere you like. The company specifications say that the operating temperature is between -10 to %2B60 degrees Celsius. But the receiver doesn't lock up even when exposed to higher temperatures. This is a great feature for a GPS receiver, making TomTom a runaway favorite.

The TomTom GPS receiver revolutionizes the way the world looks at GPS receivers. The Bluetooth-enabled PDA and GPS receiver, is hassle free, with no tangled wires, no open connections, recessed power button, and rounded metal edges, with rubber casing makes it easy to handle, operate and maintain. Even if the receiver slips off the dashboard, the reception of the network is never waslost. Though the TomTom GPS receiver is not as flashy and decked up as most of its counterparts, but it will never fail either in efficiency or accuracy. It can give many a bigger manufacturer, a run for their money, with its performance. The battery of the TomTom GPS receiver, can be replaced, when ever necessary. The TomTom GPS receiver is equipped with a rubber ring, making the body reasonably watertight. This is especially important when it comes to a tracking device. You cannot always predict the climate in which you will have to travel in. a waterproof and heat resistant body, on a GPS receiver, is of utmost importance.

The only downside of the TomTom GPS receiver is that there is no option for adjusting the time. This way the receiver cannot be automatically turned off when not in use. Apart from this, it is hard to come by any real manufacturing or technical defect in the TomTom GPS receiver.

The Tomtom GPS Receiver and additional tracking systems can be found right here at your one-stop-shop gpsreceivershop.com

The Present and Future of GPS Devices

How good have the last few years been for the GPS business? In the second quarter of 2005, over 1,200,000 GPS devices were sold to consumers around the country. In the same quarter of 2006 that number had jumped to an astonishing 2,400,000 - a leap of 100%! But what is fueling this growth? And what does the future hold for advancement in consumer Global Positioning System devices?

Read out to discover the places GPS is making the most impact today - and the areas that may hold the key to the future of GPS devices for consumers and businesses.

GPS Devices in Cell Phones

Once, the concept of a handheld GPS device would have been a tough sell. But over the next few years, we can expect to see more and more personal GPS devices - small, inexpensive and ultra-lightweight - reaching the market. Also, look for all the latest models of cell phones and advanced smart phones to start coming equipped with real time GPS capability.

And don't think that cell phone makers are pushing GPS technology on an unwilling public. Surveys held by three major cell phone makers found that GPS was the feature "most want to see" in their next cell phone (24% said GPS, 19% said Internet capability)

GPS Devices in Cars

Once the property of only long-distance truckers and military vehicles, GPS tracking and navigation devices have made their way into millions of American and imported automobiles over the past several years. In fact, the devices now come standard in several manufacturers' luxury cars.

Among the benefits these in-auto GPS devices offer drivers:

· Live traffic reports delivered to the device

· Voice activated turn-by-turn navigation

· Touch screen controls on colorful, interactive maps

· Safety features including automated police contact when the car has been stolen

GPS: Making the cars of the future safer

GPS engineers are beginning to take their technology to the next level in terms of driver safety. 3-D modeling technology used in many advanced GPS devices are now being utilized to help cars anticipate turns and obstacles in the road before the driver can even turn the wheel. In these situations, a small red light comes on inside the car, alerting the driver of impending danger.

This same "Jetsons-like" technology would also automate defensive driving by sizing up potential conflict on the road, and directing the car in the best way to avoid it.

Although both seem futuristic, consider the current line of Lexus automobiles that can parallel park themselves - truly a marvel of modern engineering! All these systems use GPS based technology that continues to push the envelope.

GPS helps businesses save money

With GPS technology become less expensive and more accurate, business are beginning to reap the benefits. Many companies report significant savings in fuel costs thanks to GPS systems that let them plan and execute the most efficient travel routes for their drivers. GPS also helps companies keep their drivers safer (and where they are supposed to be) by offering advanced tracking capabilities.

If you love technology (or just have a poor sense of direction) then stick around! The future of Global Positioning Systems looks to be an exciting ride.

In order to make an educated decision of what GPS device would best suit your needs while staying in your budget, visit gpsviews.com. We provide consumers with ALL information needed including where to buy, lowest price, and detailed GPS reviews.

The Garmin GPS 350 - The Ultimate Personal Travel Assistant!

Turn by turn real time navigation using the Garmin GPS 350.

Not wanting to become a dinosaur in an era where smart phones literally talk to you and lights in a home can be turned on or off with the clap of your hands, I went on a prowl in search of the perfect navigation system for my not so smart SUV.

As if I hadn't noticed, getting around any City or Neighborhood in the US can be a pretty daunting task, just try asking for directions from a Gas station owner and chances are, he too is as lost as you are!

As for using the maps you get from these gas stations, perish the thought, streets and names look like ant tracks all over the map...and therein lay my frustration; having to drive an SUV with no navigation system, and having to call home all the time to ask my S.O to Mapquest directions for me from wherever I happened to be at that particular time!

So, after consulting with friends who have owned multiple GPS devices and upon reading numerous reviews, I settled on the Garmin GPS 350 as the best option of the rest as this is undoubtedly one of the nicest, feature-packed and most importantly, accurate GPS unit on the market.

Before purchasing the unit, I was quite curious as to why it's called a travel Assistant; after all, an Assistant is one who takes orders, files your papers, hides your cookies so the rest of the staff cannot find them...I am getting carried away here!

The Garmin GPS 350 is truly a street smart navigation system worthy of the travel assistant title.

It has a flip-up antenna that folds into the back of the case, right above the internal speaker and grille and, along the right side are an SD card slot, a USB port, and a headphone jack.

Why anyone would want to use the expanded memory for storing family digital photos and Mp3 music beats the hebegebees out of me but, you would be shocked to know what people do with their spare time!

With a 2GB internal flash memory, half of which is dedicated to the user interface and detailed maps of North America, the Garmin GPS 350 is recognized as a removal drive when connected to your PC's USB port

On closer inspection, the Garmin GPS 350 turned out to be priced dramatically way cheaper than the others and, no bigger than a deck of cards, this navigation system could fit perfectly into my pocket or the glove compartment with minimal fuss!

What's more, the Garmin GPS 350 can be used in any vehicle, including bicycles and motorbikes!

The Initial Setup of this GPS is a breeze and, before you can use the system, you need to charge it and, once it is fully charged, power it on and be prepared to discover uncharted, traffic free territories, routes and scenes that will take your breath away and leave you wondering what type of blinkers you've been wearing all along!

No longer do you have to be subjected to driving at a crawling pace in traffic behind a garbage disposal truck threatening to spill its bounty onto your hood or worse still, behind a prison bus with the inmates mooning at you and your deeply blushing S.O all the way to work each morning!

Go Figure!

If there's one thing I know about myself when traveling, it's that I am always right when it comes to directions, and my S.O takes great pain to try to convince me otherwise... so the arguments usually last long after the trip! You can imagine the change the Garmin GPS 350 has brought to our driving experience now!

I must hasten to add though, I miss those arguments, they were a great distraction on long routes and made the journey seem shorter than it actually was!

With the Garmin GPS 350, you're instructed what to do and where to go. There's literally no second guessing this system; after all, who am I to argue with a State of the Art Satellite Navigation system that can tell you to make a right, then highlight the turn graphically and even tells you the name and driving distance of the road or route you are intending to turn into verbally!

I've tried other GPS', and believe me, this feature is definitely NOT available in them, not to mention that the Garmin GPS 350 comes standard with all accessories, and there's no need to purchase any extras.

If you crave the latest technology and a big Wow factor, then the high-performance Garmin GPS 350 should definitely be at the top of your list.

Where most GPS systems come with features that require a leave of absence from work to complete reading and understand, the Garmin GPS Nuvi 350 is a lean Navigation machine with just the features you require to navigate from point A to point B with a huge childish Grin of triumph on your face!

How Cell Phone GPS Applications Make Your Phone 'Smarter'

With all the brands, plans and models of mobile phones which are available in the market today, how would you select the best one for you? For most people, it actually depends on which features they like best.

Some would choose a good camera phone if they usually take snapshots of scenes minus the added bulk of a digital camera. Meanwhile, those who are music lovers would rather have a mobile phone which stores and plays music. Finally, there are those which are looking for smart phone applications such as GPS or Global Positioning System.

The Importance of Cell Phone GPS Applications

If you are looking for a particular mobile phone unit which already has cell phone GPS applications installed, then you are on the right track. These types of applications are important because they can improve the sense of security that you have when traveling.

If you have young kids who are going on a camping trip, for example, arming them with a mobile phone with a GPS application installed will allow you to rest assured that you can track their whereabouts in case they get lost.

Whether you are at work or at play, mobile phones with GPS applications just plain make your life more convenient.

How Cell Phone GPS Applications Make Your Phone Smarter

If you're wondering how cell phone GPS applications make your phone 'smarter' - the mere fact that you can use the phone that you have for something other than communicating is proof enough. When you add to this the fact that your phone will be installed with a receiver that can help track exactly where you are located, it's even more of a technological wonder.

Aside from giving you your exact location, a GPS with a cell phone application will broaden the functionalities that your phone can perform. For example, when you are traveling, you can use your phone to learn about the location of the nearest restaurant, gasoline station or ATM machine.

All in all, mobile phones with GPS applications installed in them are nifty devices which can be used for more than just calling or sending text messages - they help make your phones 'smarter', too.

Winter Backcountry Safety Using GPS Tracking Units

Tragic headlines describing the death and injury to back country users during the avalanche season are becoming more common place. Skiers, snowmobilers, hunters and winter campers are finding that this year's heavy snow pack has created a high avalanche risk in places that normally would not experience the threat. Most back country users are equipped with GPS tracking units, Avalanche locator beacons, probes, and shovels in an effort to minimize risk.

Even the best equipment will not substitute for the application of common sense. It goes without saying that if the land management agencies are forecasting avalanche conditions in an area that you are planning on entering then you should just plain not go. That being said most outdoor adventures do not like being told that they cannot utilize the resource. Careful planning and training can reduce the risks of a backcountry trip.

Most land management agencies will have maps available that will show where the greatest avalanche risks are located. Using handheld GPS units you can waypoint all of the highest risk locations that you need to avoid. Make sure that you and everyone in your party has a good working knowledge of your avalanche transceivers. Obviously you should never go into the backcountry in winter by yourself.

In addition every member should also carry a GPS locator unit similar to the SPOT. These units will allow you to call for assistance no matter where you are. However they only work when the sky is unobstructed. Obviously if you are buried by 6 feet of snow it probably will not be able to maintain satellite contact. Hopefully your entire party will not be caught in the avalanche so that the GPS tracking units can be initiated by a survivor.

Once the SPOT or other GPS emergency beacon is activated help should be on the way. You will then need to use your avalanche transceivers to located buried party members. Top of the line transceivers will not only tell you the exact location of the buried individual but also if they are alive and how deep they are buried. Organization is critical after an incident. One person should concentrate on locating all the buried members carefully marking each site. Other party members should begin to extricate buried members using your shovels. Never get caught in the winter back country without a shovel as it can be the difference in life or death.

In most cases you will have less than 20 minutes to locate and dig out each buried person. Rescue agencies will in most case arrive too late to assist in the location and recovery process. Occasionally some people do survive for much longer periods of time in low water content snow pack. You must work as fast and as efficiently as possible.

Obviously you can have the best winter backcountry gear available but unless you practice using it correctly it will be of little value in an emergency. Make sure your transceivers and GPS tracking units batteries are charged or fresh and always carry spare batteries in case you are trapped in bush for an extended period.

Again the use of common sense in conjunction with good planning and application will reduce the risk of death and injury while in the backcountry during avalanche season.

How Garmin GPS Watch Models Differ

The Garmin Forerunner GPS watches are without doubt, the most advanced GPS sports watches on the market today.

By linking to a network of satellites, the Forerunner watches can accurately measure speed, pace, distance and elevation above sea level. Garmin's unique approach intertwines the power of GPS, with advanced and practical sports watch features that let you measure and recording sports performances in an intelligent and intuitive way.

But what are the similarities between the six Forerunner watches on the market? and more importantly, what are the differences?

Two Generations of Forerunners

For the purposes of this discussion, we consider two "generations" of Forerunner watches. The "older generation" includes model numbers: 101, 201 and 301, which have now been superseded by the 205, 305 and 405 models - the "current generation".

How Forerunner Watches are Similar

All Garmin Forerunner watches are all-in-one GPS wrist units, meaning the GPS aerial is mounted in the watch.

This is quite distinct from other GPS watch manufacturers such as Timex, Suunto and Polar, who require you to secure an external GPS device to your body. With Forerunner watches, you can just put the watch on your wrist and you're ready to go.

The Garmin watches also share some amazing proprietary sports watch features. Some are only found in certain models, but most are present in all Forerunner watches. Below is a summary these shared features:

Virtual Partner Feature

The Virtual Partner feature lets you train against a digital person, displaying if your virtual "competitor" is "ahead" or "behind" you.

Auto Pause/Auto Resume

Pauses and resumes the stopwatch time based on your speed. If you need to stop running at a traffic light for instance, the watch stops the stopwatch timer automatically.

Auto Lap

Similarly to Auto Pause, the Auto Lap features automatically records your current "lap" and starts a new one when you have run a specified distance.

Simple Workouts

Lets you input time, distance and calorie goals and workout against them.

Pace/Speed Alert

Triggers an alarm if you vary from preset pace. You can set "Faster than" pace alerts and "Slower than" pace alerts.

Time/distance Alert

Triggers alarm when you reach a certain time or certain distance. The alerts can be set to trigger once, or repeat over and over.

Interval Training

Lets you set up exercise and rest intervals. Intervals are flexible and can be set to distances or times.

Customizable Screen(s)

The Forerunner watches display a variety of real-time data as you are performing a workout and allow you to set up customized screens.

The Differences

Now we will explore the differences in the Forerunner watches, both in terms of the differences between "generations" as well as how individual watch models within generations differ.

Older Vs Current Generation Differences

Chipset

The major difference between generations is the GPS chipset. Put simply, the current generation of watches are far superior at picking up the GPS signal, drop the signal less frequently and are more reliable in terms of accuracy than the older generation watches.

Memory Storage

Surprisingly, the older watches store an incredible 5000 laps in their memory, whereas their modern counterparts can record "only" 1000 laps.

Features

The current generation Forerunners support the Courses feature (that lets you compete against previous workouts). The older generation does not.

Simultaneous Data Fields

The older generation Forerunner watches all display three real-time data fields. The 205 and 305 watches display four. The 405 has a smaller screen and only displays 3 however.

How "Older Generation" Watch Models Differ

The 101, 201 and 301 watches all look very similar, but there are some large distinctions between them.

Heart Rate Monitor

The 301 is the only older generation Forerunner watch that supports a heart rate monitor strap.

PC Connectivity and Data Transfer

The 101 does not support PC data transfer, the 201 connects to PC via a serial port, whereas the 301 connects via USB

Power Supply

The 101 uses 2 AAA batteries to power the GPS signal. The 201 and 301 both use internal, rechargeable batteries.

Features

Only the 301 supports "advanced workouts", "sports profiles" and "auto scroll".

Note:

Advanced Workouts allow you to create custom goal-oriented workouts.

Sports Profiles are workout modes that cater specifically to the type of sport you are doing (running, biking and "other sports")

Auto Scroll is a feature that cycles through data pages in real time.

How "Current Generation" Watch Models Differ

Now we look at the current generation, from the older 205 and 305 units to the recently released 405.

Heart Rate Monitor and External Devices

The 305 and 405 support a HRM and optional foot pod devices, the 205 does not.

PC Connectivity and Data Transfer

All watches support data transfer via USB, but the 405 transmits wirelessly to an ANT USB stick.

Looks and Form Factor

The 205 and 305 look identical (besides their color). They are large, bulky and rectangular shaped face. The 405 looks more like a real watch.

Simultaneous Data Fields

The 205 and 305 display 4 data fields, the 405 displays 3.

Map Navigation

The Forerunner 205 and 305 support GPS navigation features. The 405 does not.

Touch-Sensitive Bezel

The 405 can be controlled by tapping a bezel - a "ring" around the watch face. The 205 and 305 do not.

The latest Forerunner watches offer better signal reception and a few more modern features than the older generation models, but as you have seen the watches still deliver a lot of bang for your buck and are generally much cheaper.

Portable GPS Device Guide

Getting lost is harder now that drivers can count on portable GPS devices to give them directions to new or unfamiliar destinations. Prices on these global positioning system devices have dropped and are much more affordable to the average driver yet there are more and better features on these newer GPS receivers.

Here are some of the main features and functions available on portable vehicle GPS navigators.

Unlike the more expensive factory installed versions found in some vehicles, a portable GPS device can be removed from one vehicle and used in another. Power comes from an internal battery or the 12 volt outlet in a vehicle's interior.

Addresses or names of locations are entered on a touch screen which displays 3D maps that change as the vehicle heads toward its destination. Depending on the brand or model, maps for the United States, Canada and Europe are available. Satellites keep track of where the vehicle is at all times.

Some portable GPS devices give spoken turn-by-turn directions. Drivers can set the spoken directions to include street or road names. They can also chose between either hearing a male or female voice. A few brands or models can also translate to different languages.

When a route is selected by the GPS but the driver misses the turn or exit, the GPS will return directions to get the driver back on course. In urban areas, some GPS receivers will provide alternative routes if there is traffic congestion up ahead. The driver still has the choice of ignoring the suggestion and continuing on the same original route. Other GPS devices can show routes that avoid toll booths.

Portable GPS devices that are Bluetooth compatible can allow hands-free operation if the driver supplies a Bluetooth enabled cell phone. Drivers can give a voice command to the GPS for it to find a point of interest such as a restaurant and call to make a reservation.

Although a portable GPS receiver can do many things a traditional paper map can never do, it will not replace driver experience or common sense. GPS devices usually give accurate routes, but in a small handful of situations such as on hilly terrain, turn directions are sometimes questionable.

If you don't drive often to new places, then a portable GPS may not be necessary for you. However, if you like the security and convenience of arriving to a new and unfamiliar destination without getting lost or wasting time, then a portable vehicle GPS device will become an indispensable automotive accessory you won't want to drive away from home without.
