Aviation GPS Makes Flight Experiences More Enjoyable

If you have your pilot's license you may fly a different plane each time you go out. If this is the case, you will want to be sure that you have an aviation GPS that you can take with you into each of the planes. Not all planes are equipped with the most functional global positioning systems, but you should have one on board with you when you take off. Without it, you could run into a lot of problems such as obstacles and even where you should be landing could be a problem without a GPS.

The great thing about these systems is that they are not all that costly. In the past if you wanted a decent system such as this you would have to pay out a good sum of money. Today, you can find an airplane GPS from about $500.00 and up. The more money you spend the more bells and whistles the system will likely have, but you need to do a bit of shopping around to see what features you need and those which you can do without. If you are buying such a system on a budget you will definitely want to shop around to see what is out there.

Many pilots have found that these GPS offerings with headsets are really great. These are nice because a lot of the systems out there today actually have audio capabilities, telling the pilot about upcoming obstacles, about the terrain, points of interest and more. With the use of an aviation headset you will be able to communicate with any air traffic controllers as well as tap into the audio capabilities of the GPS system. This allows for the pilot to get all of the necessary information from the same place.

Flying without a GPS is sort of like flying with blinders on. While pilots flew without these systems in the past, there is really no need to do this today. In fact, most pilots find that the global positioning systems not only give them a different level of confidence when flying, but they may also make flying a lot more interesting as they note changes in the terrain, and the systems may also allow for them to view points of interest from the air as they fly over.

Not sure if you should shell out the money for such a device because you don't fly that often? Luckily, a lot of the different models are not only for use in a plane, but also in the car and even in a boat. When you buy such a system you will find that it is very versatile, getting you where you need to go regardless of how you are traveling!

Caitlina Fuller is a freelance writer. Today, you can find an airplane GPS from about $500.00 and up. The more money you spend the more bells and whistles the system will likely have, but you need to do a bit of shopping around. With the use of an aviation headset you will be able to communicate with any air traffic controllers as well as tap into the audio capabilities of the GPS system.

Nokia N96 16gb GPS (mini Computer)

Nokia’s N96 shell is painted a sleek black that gives it a very serious demeanor. But the exterior is just there to let users know that this phone gets down to business very quickly, offering them instant accessibility to its features. There are hints of color throughout the phone though, proving that the N96 knows proper style. Near the bottom of the phone are the start and end call buttons, colored green and red respectively. Strewn around the phones are hints of silver which make a nice contrast to the almost completely black body.

More storage, more options

As good as this phone looks, it’s important not to forget that what lies beneath is vastly more important. What you have is a full-fledged phone that will keep you connected to your favorite music and movies. With 8 Gigs of storage you’ll be able to store thousands of your favorite songs and browse through them with ease using the buttons on the interface. Utilizing such a large internal hard drive is a rarity in phones, which rely on microSD cards to increase capacity. Nokia has decided to try and make your life easier with integrated hard drive storage, which means there’s no need to switch between disks to alternate your songs. After all, the N96’s goal is to streamline your life, and what better way to do that than to include a hard disk in the phone.

With all that room in the phone, there’s no need to worry about taking pictures at the highest quality. And that’s exactly what you’ll want to do to take advantage of the 5 Megapixel camera’s power. The visual quality of the photos that this camera takes are on par with the most advanced digital cameras and to really take advantage of its ability, your photos must be taken at the highest resolutions.

Entertainment on the commute

The 2.8-inch QVGA screen will more than suffice as a proper way to watch your favorite movies and television shows. With so many multimedia downloading services you’ll never go hungry for content, and you’ll never have a wasted moment.

Types of GPS Fleet Management - Know Before You Buy

GPS fleet management is an umbrella that includes a number of systems under it. Various arenas like e-commerce, message dispatch, vehicle maintenance and repair, job ticketing, vehicle following, map tracking, wireless integration, custom integration etc. come under its purview.

All these systems are used for a specific purpose i.e. to know about the unknown and mitigate its harmful effects. A company owner once reportedly said that his drivers used to rest a lot while on a business trip and it was only because of GPS fleet management that he was able to discipline them and save thousands of dollars in addition.

GPS fleet management systems are basically of two types:

  • PC fleet management.

  • Web based subscriber service.

Of the two the first one is better. The PC fleet management system is also known as client server management. It has an added advantage of interacting with the third party software systems. It also has a choice for processing credit cards. You can even get e-mails that can alert you. You are also notified about arrival status. The PC fleet management system is to be bought once so its cost can be a factor, whereas in the web based service a person has to pay a monthly fee that is usually very small. They use the IE (internet explorer) to find out the data about their vehicle. Persons can even start their own web based solutions.

Other fleet management services include the integration of manufactured and developed solutions to be used for the aid of GPS technology. It means that base software and in-vehicle hardware are synchronized for better results. This leads to reduction in costs as well a substantial increase in efficiency and productivity.

Transaction processing is another activity that is widely made use of. It saves a person from hassles as well as ensures transparency and accountability. All this is achieved through a web interface. The special characteristic of fleet management and allied services is that it can be used by any number of persons. No chocking of the routes takes place ever. Secondly, it erases the limitation of position. Anyone, anywhere, even in the remotest areas, is able to monitor the progress of his fleet.

Remarkable! Is not it?

How GPS Reviews helps to choose best navigation device for you ?

While talking about GPS Reviews we must first specify the requirements of the GPS. Perfect GPS Reviews will present in details the pros and cons of various GPS devices. Appropriate reviewing proves the presence of two most essential qualities in GPS for navigation.

There are a lot of websites all over the internet that purport to rate GPS devices. The problem with this is 1) did the reviewer actually use the device, and 2) does the reviewer actually care about what you do?

You can find latest GPS reviews on alatest.com site (which you can access from the link at the bottom), they gather the customer reviews from cnet, amazon, and other sites & put together a list of what people were saying about each item. It's fairly meaningless when you compare GPS systems by checking off which ones have turn-by-turn voice prompts, for instance. Nearly all of them do. What's helpful is when a reviewer talks about using a Garmin Nuvi in heavy traffic with a lot of ambient noise and being able to still hear the device loud and clear.

So, You can find narrative reviews by customers a lot more useful than GPS rating systems or GPS comparisons. Ratings and comparisons can be useful, but they are more of a starting point rather than something you need to make your final decision with.

Don’t Just Look to the Experts

I know this is going to seem like a strange recommendation, but when you’re looking for a great navigation device, don’t just stick to the GPS reviews you read online and in magazines. You have your own keen instinct that you can you what is good and what isn’t. Even more, you have the ability to determine what features and functions you need. Those two aspects can help you to narrow down the list just as easily as reading what the experts have to say.

So after you check out the commentary by everyone else giving their GPS reviews, take the initiative to go to a retailer in your area to learn about their specific features. Actually hold them in your hand to see how easy it is to control the menu with your fingers. This way you can learn invaluable information that far surpasses anything the GPS reviews can offer. Because, it is you, not the reviewers who have to use the navigation system, right?

Motorcycle GPS - What is it and Why Would You Want It?

GPS is the new wave of navigating, and motorcycle GPS is no exception. But what exactly is GPS and why would you want it on a motorcycle?

GPS stands for global positioning system. It's a high tech way of saying that it tell you where you are on the globe, and if you've got a motorcycle GPS system it tells you where your motorcycle is.

A GPS, including a motorcycle GPS, works by receiving radio signals from a series of satellites that are positioned in orbit around the globe. By cross referencing these satellite signals your motorcycle GPS unit can work out, to an accuracy of around 6 meters or less, exactly where you are.

In order for your GPS to work you need to be in a location where you can pick up the radio signals from a number of different satellites so that they can be cross referenced. Too few satellites and the accuracy goes down, none, or one, and it's useless.

Early GPS systems, whilst accurate, had limited usefulness for the motorcyclist or car driver because they gave you your position on the globe in latitude and longitude. Whilst it was accurate, it wasn't really user friendly, because you couldn't really use it to plot your position on a map unless you were extremely map savvy and had the resources to do so. However modern motorcycle GPS systems have advanced way beyond this, and the best motorbike GPS units have now become a total motorcycle navigation solution.

The GPS technology has been combined with modern mapping software to eliminate the problem of being given only a latitude and longitude. Now you have a visual display that shows you exactly where you are on the map. So at a glance you can tell where you are.

And where you are wanting to go. Because high quality modern motorbike GPS systems are sufficiently high tech to allow you to rely on them 100% for your complete navigation needs.

So along with a map display showing you where you are you are also able to ask your motorcycle GPS to tell you how to get to where you want to go. It will do this with extraordinary accuracy, and will do so with both visual map pointers and voice prompts via bluetooth technology direct to your motorcycle helmet.

A good GPS motorcycle unit will come preloaded with a massive number of maps, and so you can navigate your way right across the country with the maps supplied. It should also have points of interest loaded as well, so that you can ask it to tell you the nearest fuel stop, motel or food stop.

And a dedicated motorcycle GPS unit should come with a properly designed handlebar mount so that you can mount it right there in front of you on the handlebars. However you shouldn't need to look at it regularly, this isn't safe, it should tell you direct to your helmet when you need to turn right or left.

It will also be able, if you have the correct subscriptions, to tell you when there is a traffic problem up ahead, and also tell you how to navigate your way around it. So by relying on your GPS navigator you should save both time, fuel and frustrations.

And make phone calls or listen to music along the way too if you wish.

A modern motorcycle GPS unit is one of the best tools a motorcyclist can have if he or she likes long rides. It does away with the need to carry, and consult, maps, and makes navigating a breeze.

And then at the end of the day you can download your ride and store it to recreate in the future. Or share it with your friends.

GPS For Fleet Management - A Great Efficiency Enhancer

GPS for fleet management is a panacea for business owners as far as enhancing the benefits is concerned. GPS is an unavoidable necessity for anyone who has a fleet of vehicles and is interested in using them daily. It may seem to an average man that where does the need for GPS tracking arise when everything is going on well without it.

The answer is the innumerable benefits that are associated with GPS for fleet management. One cannot imagine how much money one can save by the judicious use of this latest technology.

You can save a lot and the first arena of saving is Insurance. Insurance companies know that vehicles which have this system introduced in them are less prone to accidents and thefts. This brings forth a positive image of your company and the insurance companies are willing to slash their charges. This alone contributes to about 15-20% savings in your bill.

Another benefit is that you are able to give improved service to your clients. If they inquire from you about their delivery, you can in an instant find out where your driver is and give your client the latest picture. This builds up goodwill and brings in more projects for you.

Yet another benefit is that you can keep a close watch on the movement of your driver. Because of this close watch he is not able to idle away time. He also cannot waver from the prescribed route and will not leave the vehicle idling for a long time. Thus, you can stop this outrageous waste of your hard-earned fuel.

You can even find out the speed at which your employee is driving. It has been well researched that fuel consumption increases considerably due to too much increase in speed. So if you are able to stop this and you have a large no. of vehicles that ply on a daily basis you can save a lot of money.

It is not the end of things. You can save lots of money on your stationery also. Your GPS fleet management service will manage all your time sheets in the electronic mode. Hence no need for stationery or paperwork. Thus, we see that this wonder technology can open a wide world of unforeseen benefits for us, while, earlier we were certain that our business is foolproof.

Important Key Features of GPS Receivers

Over the years GPS receivers have really changed and mostly for the better. It seems yearly new features are added and others are updated to give you the best possible equipment to use to find your way around this crazy world we live in. Most people who have GPS units will tell you how valuable these things are and we have compiled a list of the key features that you will want to have on your unit. Read further to discover if all these features are on the model you own, if not maybe it is time to upgrade the model you have.

Bluetooth hands-free calling is probably one of the most asked about features and one that you would want to have on the unit that you get. Most people do not realize how valuable it is until they have to answer the cell phone and try to drive at the same time. It is virtually impossible to live without these days. Bluetooth technology with your GPS unit lets you accept calls through the unit without having to do anything and is usually accomplished by voice commands. This means you can keep your mind on the road and have fewer distractions than ever before.

Integrated traffic receiver could very well be the second most requested add-on to GPS units these days. People want the most update travel planning and the best way to do that is through an integrated traffic receiver. This means you can find out where the worse traffic areas are and avoid them. You also will be notified of impending accidents ahead so you can avoid them as well. This will cut down your wait time and keep you on schedule no matter where you are going.

Turn by turn navigation is another thing that has been added recently as standard equipment to most GPS units on the market. This features uses text to speech technology to tell you where you must turn and which way you will need to go. This also keeps your eyes on the road and you do not have to worry about following the map. I have found this is one of those must have features as it will make you a better driver and a more safe driver as well. Make sure your unit has this feature on it.

Screen size for most models is 3.5 inches, but that is changing too as more companies are finally out the consumer likes much bigger screens. The bigger screen lets you see more and gives you greater detail than a much smaller screen. This is something that I have found to be invaluable especially if you are traveling. If you can afford the bigger screen by all means go bigger as you will enjoy the view.

Points of interest are another area that can vary with each company who makes the GPS unit. Some companies will have more listings than others so you will want to check that out. Many of these companies though will let you go to their web site and download more if you want to. For the most part though you should more than enough points of interest that you get from the factory install.

In recent years, SD and CF cards have been the wave of the future. These cards let you hold additional information that you can insert into your GPS unit to give yourself even more information. This is valuable especially if you travel a lot and do not want to download new maps and information all the time all you have to do is change the memory card that you have. It saves time and the other advantage is it will not slow down the machine as often as a full memory card will.

The GPS features that we have talked about above is definitely ones that you will want to take a closer look at and if you do not have them an upgrade is maybe what you need. Most of these upgrades are not very expensive at all and some companies are now making this all-standard equipment on some models as well. To get the most out of your GPS unit you will need all these features on the list above. There are also minor ones we have not mention that you should also be able to get also. No matter which ones you choose remember than a GPS unit and added features will make traveling so much easier.

How GPS Tracking Device Protects Your Kids

How many times have you wished that you could be a fly on the wall in the life of your family members? There are probably times in every parent's life when he or she wishes to know where the kids are taking the car - or even walking on foot. Well, if you are one of those parents then you're in luck! Because there are tons of companies that offer some version of a GPS tracking device for people like you. And the good part is that these devices were not created with malice in mind, but instead were meant to help you keep your family safe.

About the GPS Tracking Device

You might be wondering how one of these devices can help you keep tabs on your kids. Well, put simply, the system is able to communicate directly with satellites orbiting the Earth. These satellites communicate back to the system its exact geographic coordinates and exact time. With this information, and a little bit of computer technology thrown into the pot, you now have the luxury of watching where any person is traveling who holds one of these devices by looking at a map on your computer miles away - and of course, this includes your kids. This means, you can watch them to make sure they don't go to that friends house you forbade them from visiting, or make sure they don't drive 80 miles per hour in your new car.

It sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, doesn't it? Well, it's actually a true piece of our reality. Even better, it's an affordable piece of our reality. In fact, some of the units that have been created to track kids and teens run for as little as $100 - not bad! So now I bet you're wondering how you can get your hands on one of these need little units. Don't worry; in this article, we will look at some devices that are available online and in stores so that you can begin the process of making your family safer.

Finding the GPS Tracking Device for You

With tons of devices available for you to choose from, how will you be able to select the one that will suit your specific needs? The best way to get started is to read the short list below of units on the market. They will give you an idea of the features you can take advantage of so that you can effectively narrow down your options. Let's get started!

GPSNanny Products

This company was created with your kids and teens in mind. There is at least one GPS tracking device available for both age groups to help you keep tabs on them, and help them feel safer that someone can find them if they are in trouble. The two units we will briefly look at in this article are the WalkAbout and Teen Tracker.

The WalkAbout is a small device - about the size of a closed flip phone - that can fit in your kids' pockets, bookbags or purses. Its main purpose is to help you watch where your kids are traveling when they are not in your presence. Some of the features you can take advantage of with this system include being able to watch your kids move on a virtual map that you can view from your home on the computer or mobile tracker in real time. By looking at the map, you learn where your kids are located, and can even create a geo-fence that gives your kids boundaries as to where they can travel. You will automatically be alerted via your mobile phone if they venture outside this area; this way you can always know they're safe. But probably the best feature on this device is the emergency button that let's your child alert you if he or she senses impending danger.

The Teen Tracker, on the other hand, is a GPS tracking device that goes into the vehicle your teen drives. By plugging it into your cigarette lighter, you can watch where and how fast your teen is driving. The system also comes with a remote door unlock feature, auto security interface, and emergency button.

Your search for the perfect GPS tracking device doesn't have to end here - this short list actually only tips the iceberg on what's available. Besides, you want to make sure that what you find satisfies the desire you have for keeping your kids safe. So do a little bit more searching, look for great prices, and make your selection in care. That way, the GPS tracking device you bring home can be the one that turns you into that fly on the wall you've always hoped to be.

Portable GPS Systems

Guys, never have your wife tell you to stop and ask for directions! To avoid a possible argument read this article. A GPS is one of the finest travel accessories available. Regardless of your need and your budget you can find the right GPS for you. There are many brands and makes on the market - Garmin, Magellan, Astar, Amcor, etc. You can buy new units as well as used and reconditioned ones, which have warranties, and these are generally very affordable. One can spend hundreds of dollars on the GPS depending on individual needs. There are portable ones which can be carried in your hand as well as those to fit on your dash or even on your motorcycle. Of course many of the more expensive cars today have the GPS built into the dash.

All GPS systems offer built in maps of the United States, many with maps of Canada, as well as Europe. Screens differ in size but even the 3.5" touch screen provides adequate viewing and as well as voice instructions. It is to your advantage to have one which speaks to you telling of turns, intersections, etc. Many have a reroute function to use if you are caught in a traffic jam or a wreck. You can choose a male or female voice to give directions in several languages. Many GPS units have the ability to download more updated maps which has the obvious advantage.

On long trips you may need entertainment other than your radio during your drive, and many GPS devises come equipped with stereo, a MP3 player or an FM transmitter and can be played through your car stereo or a Bluetooth. Some connect to MSN direct service for weather updates, traffic reports and a host of other things. Of course, this feature has a monthly service charge.

Your GPS helps you find service stations, restaurants, theaters and a host of other things. When in an unfamiliar area this feature will prove invaluable. Recently I was in Kansas City wanting to eat some of their famous steaks. Being unfamiliar with the city, my GPS gave me a list of Steak Houses and after choosing one, directed me to the front door. This is a lot better than trying to follow a map or stopping to ask for directions.

The GPS, depending on the features, receives signals from a number of satellites insuring that your directions are always accurate.

I would not begin a long trip to unfamiliar territory without my GPS and the next car I buy will have the feature built in!

Security And Well being is a site devoted to helping you secure your home and/or your business. You will also find items for your pet, the nursery, and personal security. Items are added to increase your home automation and organization and well as items for your personal well being.

Why is Cell Phone GPS Illegal?

Your cell phone always knows where you are, even if you do not have GPS on your phone. It sends out a signal to the nearest tower so that you can get and receive your calls and/or text messages. Many phones today do have GPS, and they can narrow down your location to within a few feet of you rather than by a tower location. However, as useful as this can be, you have to know if it is illegal to use this to see where someone is. For the most part, you should be glad this is not something most can do.

Can you imagine how hard it would be to be stalked by someone? Though you may not think much of this, it happens more often than you think. It could happen to you. You want to stay safe, but that would be impossible if someone could use the GPS technology in your phone to see where you are at all times. If being stalked, the last thing you want to do is to leave your phone somewhere. This type of tracking is illegal.

In many cases, if your location is being tracked by GPS on your cell phone, you have to know it and agree to it. This is something some companies do when they give their employees phones, but it is not always legal. Your company may have a right know where you are during work hours, but what about after? If you always have your work phone with you, they can track you on matter where you are or what you are doing, even when you are off the clock.

GPS can do wonders for us, however, when it comes in a cell phone. This can help police find you if you are reported missing or kidnapped, or if you have been in a car accident and can not call for help. It can also assist 911 if you dial, but then can not speak for any reason. You can also find devices with GPS that you can use to be sure you know where your kids are at all times.

You may not be legally allowed to search for someone or locate them with GPS, but you can see what you can find out about them if you know their phone number. You can try a reverse number lookup to search a phone number for origin. That may not be all of the information that you want to have, but it can help more than you can imagine when trouble is brewing.

Martin Verite is a freelance reporter and technologist who has spent years covering the telecommunications industry. Find out everything you need to know about reverse cell phone lookups at his site http://www.ReverseLookUpAnyNumber.com

Golf GPS Reviews
In countless fields of business, entertainment, health and medicine, Global Positioning System (GPS) is widely utilized. It's no longer new to our sense of hearing...

GPS Systems - An Overview

Global Positioning System is referred as GPS is a device, which gives the most accurate and most sophisticating navigation system. They are generally used to find your destination giving you the right direction, while you are travelling to unknown places. Earlier, they were used by the defence people to perform military operations, weapon systems and tracking missiles. In a short span of time they were used by the people of all modes for navigation while they travel.

In the present day, they are used in airplanes, ships, trucks and cars for easy navigation of the route to reach the destination faster than before. The three main components that are required in the Satellite navigation system are the satellite, monitor stations and the GPS receiver. The GPS receiver is a computing device, which receives signals from the satellite and processing them to determine the location. The components that a GPS receiver contains are an antenna, processors, an accurate clock and a display screen. Sat Nav systems are available in both portable and mountable designs.

In the early models, the GPS receiver can receive the signals from only four channels, now through the advancement of the technology; the present navigational systems have the capacity to receive more than 15 channels. These receivers are designed in in-built models and hand-held models or portable models. For frequent travelling uses the portable model suits best because it is compact and easy-to-carry. Apart from these components, some of the other features that have to be noted are the maps, display, voice instructions, Wi-fi connectivity and Bluetooth and the entertainment options.

Before buying a GPS unit, the main feature that has to be noted is the hard drive capacity. If a hard drive capacity is high, the unit has a large memory which helps you to store more maps and other data. The display of the GPS unit has to be big to view the places clearly without any disturbance. The main source that a navigation system has to contain is the map. The GPS units which have been introduced recently comes with a preloaded maps of your region, if you require a map of other places they can be loaded to the unit by a CD or through a website.

Mostly an SD card is used in satellite navigation systems to expand the memory of the unit to store more data you require. In the present day situation, the requirement of a navigational system has been increased, that helps you to reach your destination correctly, even if you are new to the place. Some GPS systems come with a touch screen option, which easily helps the user to navigate. With all these incredible features the GPS weighs just few ounces, which easily fits your pocket.

GPS Tracking - Why You Shouldn't Leave Home Without One!

What is GPS?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. High above us, there are a group of 24 satellites orbiting the earth constantly providing information to tell us the map location (latitude and longitude) of a car or other vehicle. It also tells us how fast the vehicle is traveling and in what direction.

How is GPS Tracking Information Helpful?

• For parents, it takes some of the worry out of your kids driving long distances home from college. You know where they are and when to expect them home.

• For parents of teenagers, you never have to wonder if your son or daughter is where they say they are. No more late night phone calls asking - "Where are you?"

• For baby-boomers, the shoe is on the other foot - it helps to take some of the worry out of your elderly parents driving home from vacation or just driving around town. You know where they are and this allows them to be more independent.

• GPS tracking is customer service at it's finest. You know instantly which of your drivers is closest to the customer needing help.

• Imagine how thrilled your customers will be when you can tell them exactly when to expect their delivery!

• For employers, using GPS tracking allows you to know how fast your employees are driving, how long a break they are taking (vehicle hasn't moved), and if they are where they say they are!

• GPS tracking also allows you to monitor fuel usage based on how fast your employee is driving and the automatic mileage feature reminds you to schedule, regular preventative maintenance.

• GPS tracking is customer service at it's finest! You know instantly which of your drivers is closest to the customer needing help. And Imagine how thrilled your customers will be when you can tell them exactly when to expect their delivery!

• GPS Tracking can eliminate the need for having your truckers fill out driving logs.

• Many insurance companies now offer discounts for vehicles protected with tracking systems.

How to Compare GPS Units to Get the Best One For You

In order to figure out which of the many GPS systems is best for you, you need to compare GPS units in some logical way. To do this you need to first understand what is being offered and how much that's going to cost you. If you know your budget, you can narrow down the selection quite a bit. After that, it's just a matter of fine tuning what extra features you want.

By GPS units, I mean the kind you attach to your car's windshield, not the kind you take hiking with you. There are a lot of GPS systems out there and finding the right one seems confusing at first. In this article, I'm going to focus mainly on systems built by Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan, since they are the biggest manufacturers.

All GPS units keep track of where you are and calculate routes to where you're going. Here's a list of what virtually every GPS device can already do. Think of this as standard equipment.

All GPS's

* Give you directions with voice prompts.
* Have a touch screen.
* Have different views or representations of their maps.
* Include a database of Points of Interest (POIs).
* Come with maps of the lower 48 states.
* Automatically calculate your best route.

This is all great, but it's the extra or optional features that are the real kicker!

According to how much you want to pay, you can get:

* Spoken street names, instead of just plain voice prompts.
* A larger 4.3-inch screen--measured diagonally.
* Maps of Europe, Canada, and Mexico.
* Incorporate Bluetooth.
* Tell you real time traffic and weather.
* Can be used as a digital picture viewer, audio book player, or mp3.
* Have a much larger POI database.

What you really need to do now is to figure out how much you're willing to pay, and then see which makes and models will fit your budget. Let me give you a few examples.

A basic GPS costs $200 or less. For that you can buy a really nice unit from Garmin, Tom Tom, or Magellan which can do all of the basic features listed above. Three possible models are the Garmin nuvi 200, the Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition, or the Magellan Maestro 3100.

If you don't need Bluetooth for hands free calling, or directions that actually say the name of the street (but which do say "turn right," or something to that effect), then a basic unit may easily be all you need to buy.

If you want all the bells and whistles, then you're going to have to pay more. The top of the line unit that Garmin makes costs in the neighborhood of $900, but it can do everything for you except tie your shoes. (They have a model coming out next year that can do just that! Just kidding!)

GPS units are great and there are a ton of other features you can get with these devices. What you need to do now is decide on your budget and get online and shop.

Tom Tom Go 720 - Modest Yet Sensational GPS Navigation System

TomTom 720 is an extension of the tom tom line that we can expect to see in future. It adorns lot of specifications to the model being thinner and faster. It has a nicer screen than many pervious models, also it hosts new features that make the 720 an important device.

The TomTom 720 looks like the ONE XL, but a bit thinner than the ONE XL, so it is extremely bright and very easy to read. The screen doesn't fade when viewed from very wide and very high angles like other screens. The screen is 4.3 inches and runs at 480×272 pixels and performs very well in bright sunlight.

On the top is the power button, and on the back are the speakers and a newly designed way for the mount to connect. SiRFstarIII chipset makes for very fast signal acquisition, which can stay in environments like urban gullies that are tough for older chipsets. The maps of the USA and Canada come pre-installed on 2 GB of internal flash memory. So the SD slot remains free to add more maps or to install MP3 files for the music player for that matter. Bluetooth for data connectivity as well as hands free calling can be found under hood. There is also an FM transmitter to pipe the music into the much better audio system in your vehicle.

If your device was sitting on a store shelf while a map update was taking place you can upgrade to the latest map within that 30 day period by going to the website.

The TomTom GO 720 is the first TomTom device to feature their new version 7 application. When navigating to an address, you are now prompted for the state, first and independently of the city. A current street name field has been added to the primary interface. Brand logos for certain POIs are now displayed on the map which they call "brand icons". The 720 produced much faster routes and a faster interface than offered in the ONE and ONE XL devices. multi destination routing is available through the TomTom Itinerary Planning feature.

TomTom is doing a lot on accentuating new safety features in version 7. There is a new 'Help me!' for help of getting specific information about your current location. Now you can search the nearest car repair facility, hospital, police station, pharmacy, fire station etc, etc more easily. To add more hiding options while driving, suggests breaks on long drives, warns on over the speed limit, or when you are near a school or church. Safe option to read aloud incoming SMS (text) messages using a combination of text-to-speech and speech recognition technology is like an icing on cake.

The 720 also makes wide leaps towards user customization. through custom vehicle icons, You can now pick a different type of car to use in your display or even can create it. create your own voice prompts. viewing of certain document file formats.

TomTom Go 720 has created buzz in the industry than any other recently announced device.

Choosing a GPS

Many people have enjoyed the benefits of mapquest when looking for directions between two places. Having a GPS is like having a mapquest right in your car, but better. A GPS can give you traffic details, tell you when to turn, and help you find rest stops and places to stay.

A GPS system can cost anywhere between $150 and $600. The basic everyday GPS is usually good enough for most people. If you need something to help you get from point a to point b then a good gps for about $150-200 is a good place to look. The more expensive models usually are bigger and have touch screens and other advanced features.

If you depend on your GPS for your business or for meeting people, then it may be wise to buy a more expensive GPS. A more expensive GPS will be better for people that need it everyday for complicated driving.

Maps are usually a whole different animal, and in order to keep up to date with your maps, you will have to pay for them. In some areas, new businesses and stores are built everyday and need constant updating to stay up to date in these areas. If you are just the casual user, you might only have to update your GPS once in a while.

The biggest features required for a car GPS are 3D map viewing, which allows you to see a virtual display of your windshield, spoken directions, which help you keep your eyes on the road, and points of interest, which automatically take gas stations, hotels, and rest stations and add them to your GPS system. After that, a touch screen can make it much easier to navigate the controls of a GPS system. A bigger screen is nice, but not really necessary when buying a GPS. The next thing to consider is if your GPS can recieve traffic updates. While this is only available in certain areas, the GPS can recieve messages from a FM radio station that gives it information on traffic reports. This is a great feature to have and is worth the extra cost if you live in a metro area.

The last thing to consider is will you be taking the GPS out of the car. If you will be using your GPS on foot, then it can make a lot of sense to get one with a decent battery life. It can be very helpful to have a GPS when camping or hiking.

Talking about the Magellan GPS

Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, the Magellan GPS company has been a leader in direct to consumer portable navigation devices since the industry started taking off a few years ago. In fact, the Magellan GPS RoadMate series of portable car navigation systems has even won some awards. Because of the huge success that Magellan GPS has had in recent years, they have opened up another headquarters, this time in Europe (Carqufou, France to be exact).

There are several different types of Magellan GPS devices that are available to consumers, depending on what their needs are. The Magellan GPS Triton is handheld and designed for outdoor navigation. It has a full color, large display screen that shows the graphics in good detail. Created for the outdoorsy types, the Magellan GPS Triton has a rugged exterior (great in the event that you drop things a lot) and is also waterproof. The Magellan GPS Triton comes in six different models.

The Magellan GPS Maestro is another kind of GPS system, this one designed for use in the vehicle. It provides turn by turn directions and can give you information on how to get to just about any destination in North America. It has a touch screen, which is really easy to use (even if you are old and try to avoid technology at all costs). To get directions, all you have to do is enter in the address of your destination. From there, you can either get a two or three dimensional map. Additionally, with its friendly voice, the Magellan GPS Maestro will talk you through all of the turns that you need to make.

If you are interested in combining the features of the Magellan GPS Triton and the Magellan GPS Maestro, the Magellan GPS Crossover is perfect. In fact, it is the first pocket sized, fully featured, crossover GPS to ever be made on earth. Because of its size, it is perfect to take with you camping, hiking, or wherever you may be headed on foot or bike outside. However, it also has the programming design that enables you to put it in your car and get the same kind of directions that you would expect in a vehicle navigation system. The Magellan GPS Crossover has the best of both worlds! Plus, because they have been on the market for a while, just about all Magellan GPS systems are more affordable than ever.

A Guide to GPS Car Navigation Systems

It seems like everyone is interested in GPS car navigation systems these days. Makes total sense! GPS devices can tell you where you are and give you turn-by-turn directions to tell how to get to where you want to go, anywhere in the United States, Canada, Europe, or Mexico.

Plus they come with all sorts of cool features. And it's right there where part of the problem is for anyone interested in purchasing one.

There are essentially too many manufacturers with too many products that do too many things.

Buying a GPS car navigation system feels like getting a master's degree in engineering.

Well, if you'll give me a few moments of your time, I can reduce all of this confusion to a few things you will need to think through in order to pick out the right GPS for you and your budget.

Right off the bat, there are three major GPS manufacturers, Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan. Garmin is the big dog in the industry, selling around 70% of all GPS devices. Tom Tom is a new arrival, but they've grabbed a lot of market share with excellent products at excellent prices. While Magellan is the older company, but not to be outdone in the features department.

There are other manufacturers, but personally I prefer to stick with the industry winners.

As far as what these things do, let's take a look base features first.

All GPS units can do the following:

* Tell you where you are and how to get where you're going via voice instructions

* Access a large database of pre-programmed destinations (called Points of Interest, or POIs)

* Interface with the user via a touch screen and an icon-based operating system

* Auto-calculate either the shortest or fastest route

If that's all you need to do, then for about $150, you can get all this and more. Things like digital picture viewer capability and audiobook capability are essentially standard features.

If you want to spend more, however, look what all you can get!

* Bluetooth for hands-free calling

* FM transmission, so you can hear your device through your car's stereo system

* More extensive maps, Canada, Europe, Mexico

* Real-time weather and traffic (usually via subscription)

And, there's more!

As you go up in price what each company offers really starts to differentiate itself.

What you need to do now is get on an informative website where you can actually look at specific devices, see exactly what their features are, and check out their prices.

An Overview of GPS Products

GPS technology has advanced greatly over the past several years. It isn't always for the most advanced purposes, but it generally helps the public good. That same technology that helps soccer moms find their way also can help pilots navigate across these skies with amazing precision. To really understand the usefulness of the technology, one must look back and understand just how far it has come.

The Garmin 296 gps features many of the first advancements in the genre. It still serves as a workable option for pilots in fact, except it lacks some of the features its descendants have. The point is that a standard GPS incorporated professional quality in what was effectively a consumer device. With a few simple button presses it could turn to a standard car GPS, a nautical navigation aid, or a full blow airplane GPS unit. It didn't cut on the quality either. Full flight paths were shown and applied over topographical maps so that the users would be flying blind. It even had the added bonus of a built-in log book that recorded departure and arrival times. It was just one model though.

The Garmin 396 took it an extra step with some new features that didn't necessarily rewrite the book. The topographical map could work in new options, like time-based alerts when any reported obstacles or danger became near. It started a new trend of integration though, as XM satellite reports could be picked up by the GPS unit through an antennae. These included weather reports and notes about air traffic densities to make it easy for you to plan your flight.

The Garmin 496 is the next one in the line of powerful GPS. It just builds on the legacy with an incredibly more powerful device. The unit updates at a higher frequency to give near instantaneous reports on one's position. It also increases the topographical map to offer greater awareness. The GPS unit now observed one's altitude to only give the most relevant information and alerts. It combined this with a huge database of possible information. Detailed diagrams of almost every known airport's taxiways was a big bonus, along with the perfect airport directory for the pre-planning stages. Everything was just easier.

It is easy to forget the way that basic mainstream technology can ultimately produce such professional devices. Just remember this information when considering your next navigation add-on.
