Choosing A Garmin GPS Product

Garmin is the world's biggest manufacturer of consumer GPS and the name has almost become synonymous with the product. The company has a long and envious history of producing quality and versatile GPS. Garmin has produced many kinds of GPS - some for automobiles, hikers, etc. Within each category there are different models to suit every activity.

For example the Garmin StreetPilot c340 has a text to speech functionality. So you have the added advantage of hands free operation and then the ability to concentrate on the road whilst driving and not looking at the GPS display to see what is written there. This mode of operation can take complex commands such as "Turn Right at Next Intersection". This feature is a big plus for people who need to keep looking ahead on the road while driving.

This device can also be fitted with a traffic receiver so you can get real time traffic information. With this feature, you can avoid traffic jams, road, diversions etc so you can reach your destination quicker.

Garmin also has the Nuvi 200 which is quite basic compared to others by the same manufacturer. But they come with some interesting fittings such as the unit converter. For those who want enhanced functionality, you can subscribe to travel information services.

This low cost range has some good features too such as the SD card slot to allow for the installation of add-ons like extra maps.

The favorite in the 300 series of GPS is the Garmin. 396. This product is an improvement over the 200 series as it displays information on satellite weather, has colorful maps and displays terrain warnings. Perhaps the biggest feature is the ability of the 396 to warn the user of any disturbances in the area of approach. For example if there is war or a conflict, you are informed accurately. The 396 also deserves some commendation for its crystal clear images which are visible in even poor light.

A Guide to GPS Car Navigation Systems
It seems like everyone is interested in GPS car navigation systems these days. Makes total sense! GPS devices can tell you where you are and give you turn-by-turn...

Buying The Right Handheld GPS

If you are contemplating about purchasing a handheld GPS (Global Positioning System), then chances are you already have some ideas of what these items are and how they can make your life easier. In fact, many people are starting to look into these very useful GPS devices, since they quite literally tell you were you are in the world. Obviously if you are active in outdoor sports, such as golf, hiking, or fishing or the like, a GPS can be a very convenient item, giving you ease of mind that you will always know exactly where you are. With a GPS, you never need to fear getting lost in the wild outdoors ever again.

When it comes to selecting the right handheld GPS, the first step is to know what you will be using it for. For instance, the best GPS for hiking in the Canadian Rockies may not be as useful if you are trying to navigate the city streets of London. Moreover, if you are using your GPS in a boat or car, as well as when walking, you should look for a multipurpose unit.

GPS receivers perform a variety of functions that you need to decide which ones right one for you. For example, the basic GPS simply displays the latitude and longitude of your location. While it might include routes and tracks, the basic variety will not include maps or points of interest.

If you require maps as well as location details, you should opt for a Mapping Handheld GPS which has the power to download maps from CD-Roms sources such as Garmin MapSource, and Magellan Mapsend. A Mapping Auto GPS is the perfect answer if you are exploring in your car, and likewise the Marine GPS is the ideal choice if you are planning to do a lot of boating.

Before you choose your handheld GPS, be sure to consider how you will be using it. Once again, what is needed for hiking in the wilderness may not be appropriate for urban adventures!

GPS Wrist Watch Brings Out the Athlete in You

A GPS wrist watch is an unprecedented tool for anyone exercising outdoors. Progress in design of consumer electronics is making this application of GPS technology increasingly more affordable and the quality is improving as well.

A GPS wrist watch tells you how far and how fast you're going, and can even give you directions home when you've finished your workout. Since GPS wrist watches can be outfitted with heart rate monitors, they are more popular than ever. Heart rate monitors were once considered suitable for only professional athletes, but today these units are meeting the needs of the increasing population of the exercising public. More and more amateur exercisers are using heart rate monitors to gauge the intensity of their workouts.

The only function on a GPS wrist watch that does continue to work if you exercise is the heart rate monitor function. To work around the lack of GPS signal indoors, many athletes are making use of additional units called pods for their sport. For example, a runner would use a foot pod, which attaches to the shoe laces and starts to work as soon as there is motion. The pod gives all the information needed, such as distance, speed, and running cadence. There are cycling and swimming pods as well as other pods.

GPS wrist watches are becoming so popular as we learn that manually taking your pulse during exercise is unreliable and impractical. Another tool we are encouraged to make use of is the perceived intensity of a workout, and this also too subjective and should not be left up to chance. A heart rate monitor is the only way to create a truly scientific workout regimen based on your target heart rate for your age group.

There are two ways to take the heart rate. The most popular is by using a chest strap apparatus. These are battery-operated, and the most popular designs are those that allow consumers to switch out their own expired batteries, rather than mailing their monitor back to the manufacturer for battery replacement. Women can take advantage of this same technology built right into special heart rate monitor sports bras. Another, but less popular, method of monitoring heart rate is a fingertip sensor on the watch to measure heartbeat. This means there's no chest strap, but reviewers say it's difficult to place your fingers on the sensors while working out.

One popular feature of GPS watches is the 'personal trainer' function. A virtual runner/walker/swimmer is programmed to set the pace you choose, and your progress is tracked adjacent to the virtual trainer. In a glance you can see the icons of the assistant and yourself and can easily see if you are ahead or behind. This one function is worth the price of the units for most professional athletes, who often train alone yet need to awaken the competitive spirit within. Many report the virtual trainer function accomplishes this goal.

GPS wrist watches can store runs/walks/swims and all the statistics related to them for your perusal later, or to recall later if you want to repeat a course. Some GPS wrist watches can store one thousand laps of a run. This is one of the most popular functions of GPS wrist watches. A second popular feature is the ability to download them onto your computer for analysis. Newer models even have automatic data transfer when you are near your computer, no cables needed. Throw away those log books! Software is included with the GPS wrist watches so you can analyze and create your workouts. As your fitness improves, the software suggests workouts to keep you in your training heart rate zone.

When shopping for a GPS wrist watch, be sure to choose one with a display that is large enough for you to read at arms length. And be sure the buttons are easy to find and push with your fingers while you're on the move.

GPS Systems that Magellan Would be Proud of

Ferdinand Magellan was the Portuguese explorer who was the first to sail around the world with his crew. He is the guy who also gave the Pacific Ocean its name. Magellan also had the unfortunate assignment in the early 1500s of finding a water route through South America. If he would have had a GPS device packed in his trunk along with his feather hat and tights, he could have been saved a lot of time and trouble. Today, we have an invention that would make Magellan proud, and one of the companies that manufacture these devices shares his name. The GPS systems made by Magellan are top of the line instruments that keep people all over the world from getting lost.

GPS systems are capable of pinpointing your location while you are driving in your car either on Route 66 cross-country or in the middle of the world s largest city. Units that are made to sit on the dashboard of cars usually plug in to the car s cigarette lighter adapter, and have brightly colored screens and tons of helpful functions to help you on your way. The handheld units are portable and even though they have a smaller screen than auto GPS units, they are durable and small enough to carry with you right in the palm of your hand, making them ideal for camping and hiking. Besides the auto and handheld GPS Magellan systems, there are four other categories of GPS instruments: Marine, PDA, laptop, and aviation. Coming in all different shapes, sizes, colors, textures, and purposes, Magellan makes a device that is perfect for everybody. The auto GPS devices can plot directions and help you find your way around downtown Miami. Marine units alert the user to the location of buoys, lighthouses, and even fish. PDA and handheld devices are portable and can go with you just about anywhere. Laptop units are just that, GPS laptops. Aviation units are, of course, used by pilots and aviators up in the skies.

Magellan is a company that has its headquarters in Santa Clara, California, and they also have European headquarters located in France. Enjoying exceptional revenue growth during the GPS revolution, the company is known worldwide for its award-winning variety of GPS navigational systems, consistently leading the industry in directional innovations. Magellan also stakes claim to the best-selling single frequency survey product line in the world. Some of the most popular award-winning models they have made are the Magellan Triton, the eXplorist, the Maestro, the Roadmate, and the NeverLost.

GPS Updates - Is Your Mapping Software Out of Date?

GPS updates and improvements are coming faster and faster these days. Portable and dashboard-mounted GPS navigators are now standard in many new cars and trucks, and the uses of GPS in daily life are expanding rapidly.

Drivers now expect much more from their car GPS unit than accurate street and highway maps. They want to know speed limits, driving times, and where traffic is likely to be backed up. They want to know the location of the nearest gas station, or post office, or restaurant.

GPS technology uses signals from military satellites to pinpoint a user's exact geographic location. But most of the time, knowing your exact latitude and longitude--in and of itself--is not particularly useful. The real value of GPS lies in the interface between the positional signal from space and the mapping software stored inside each receiver.

What does your Nuvi know?

GPS maps software packages contain an astonishing amount of information. Regular GPS users quickly become accustomed to having all this information at their fingertips, and often find it irritating when some detail is missing. But those driving with a GPS navigator for the first time often find it to be a remarkable experience. The device always "knows" where you are, what lies ahead, and how to get to where you are going--and it tells you.

It's easy to forget sometimes where all that "knowledge" comes from. Information on streets, services and points of interest all has to be collected manually, by people out driving the road network, conducting surveys and recording the data. In this regard GPS maps are no different than old paper street maps. They represent a snapshot in time, and as time passes they may become out of date.

The downtown street grid of a major city may change very little over the years. But traffic patterns and driving restrictions may change. Detours and one-way designations may be put in place. Freeway on-ramps and exits may be opened or closed. In more newly developed areas the road network itself does change and expand all the time.

But roads are just the beginning. In addition to actual maps, GPS navigators contain many layers of additional information. Business and service locations stored in your GPS can change virtually overnight. New surveys can always reveal new points of interest, either because something has changed or because the particular piece of data was never collected before.

If you think about it, you probably know many ways in which your town or region has changed in just the past few years. Your GPS should know about those changes too.

Maps and GPS Updates

Drivers who invest in expensive GPS navigators are now demanding better and more up-to-date maps and information, and manufacturers are trying to respond. Unfortunately, the release of new GPS updates for specific brands and models is sometimes erratic. You may buy a new unit with pre-installed mapping software, only to see new software released soon after. This together with the cost of the mapping updates is a common source of irritation for GPS users.

To understand why this occurs, it's helpful to know something about the process of GPS data collection. GPS makers like Garmin contract with mapping companies, such as Navteq, to provide their geographic information. The mapping companies continually survey and re-survey different areas, and update their databases accordingly.

Data gathering for new maps is a time-consuming and expensive process. And once the information is collected, it can take a while for GPS manufacturers to convert it into their own specific software formats and produce GPS updates (in the form of a download or DVD) for distribution.

However like everything else in the world of GPS, this extended process of data collection and product production is improving. Increasingly, mapping companies and GPS manufacturers are prioritizing areas for updating based on customer feedback.

GPS updates for Garmin, Magellan, TomTom and other popular brands are now coming yearly in most cases, and contain more new information. The latest major map update for Garmin Nuvi and Street Pilot users, called City Navigator North America 2009, was released in the spring of 2008. It contains improved map coverage of over 60 major metropolitan areas in the United States and Canada, and six million updated points of interest.

Other companies are experimenting with new strategies for keeping their GPS maps software and databases as current as possible. TomTom recently introduced MapShare technology in its GO 720 GPS receiver. Mapshare allows TomTom users to submit and share their own GPS updates immediately when route changes or mapping errors are noted. Other TomTom owners can then choose whether or not they want to download the customer-generated changes, or wait for official updates that are verified by the company.

In coming years it seems certain that number of GPS navigators on the road will continue to expand, and new approaches to geographic information sharing will be developed. As these processes unfold, the cost of GPS map updates will likely go down even as the quantity and quality of information continues to rise.

Description
TomTom's latest offering, the TomTom GO 730 adds some great new features to the GO 720. Just like its older counterpart the GO 730 has a glare resistant 4.3 inch touchscreen, and Text-to-Speech for spoken street names. The GO 730 goes one step further by adding two new TomTom technologies: IQ Routes and Advanced Lane Guidance.

IQ Routes
The new TomTom IQ Routes technology is based on actual average speeds on roads, rather than the posted speed limits. This intelligent routing technology is based on anonymous historical speed profiles of over 6.2 billion miles of driven roads, gathered over the years by millions of TomTom users. It takes into account all the factors that may influence the time it takes drivers to get to their destination, including traffic lights, rotaries, steep slopes and speed bumps.

The TomTom IQ Routes speed profile database continues to grow at the rate of over half a billion measurements per day, so the time and spatial accuracy of TomTom IQ Routes technology will continually increase. Drivers can be confident that they will always be given the smartest route, incorporating detailed local knowledge. This allows for more efficient daily route planning, in particular when driving through urban and mountainous areas.

Advanced Lane Guidance
With the new Advanced Lane Guidance feature, navigating difficult junctions becomes easier than ever before. Advanced Lane Guidance provides users with realistic visuals of complex highway junctions and lane-specific directions. Static images of road signs, in the same color as the ones displayed on the road, ensure that drivers have an even more realistic view of the road ahead, and their specific route.

Features

New premium look with a high-quality finish, expanded map coverage and comes pre-installed with the latest navigation features.

GPS Navigation Systems - A Must-Have

GPS Navigation Systems are a lot like DVRs (better known as TiVo). People who don't own them fail to understand why they're such a big deal, and those who have them can't live without them.

Today's automobiles come with a variety of extras, from passenger side air bags to the ubiquitous car alarms. Entertainment options range from high-end speakers and CD players to multiple DVD players. The GPS navigation system, however, forms the bridge between safety and entertainment features. While they're definitely entertaining, they can also become a must-have safety net in your travels.

GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) navigation systems can replace all the maps in your glove compartment and ensure that you arrive at your destination on time. GPS navigation systems are equipped with mapping software and can give you driving directions, show you alternate routes if you're stuck in a traffic jam, and can help you negotiate a new city. While you're on the road, a GPS navigation system can also guide you to the nearest gas stations, restaurants, and other points of interest.

Some GPS navigation systems are built right into a vehicle, while others are handheld devices that mount on your dashboard. Although GPS navigation systems are used by everyone from rescue workers to hikers, if you're using one for driving, it's helpful to select one that has voice navigation features. The GPS navigation system will tell you when you're approaching a point where you need to, for example, turn, and then tell you to make your turn. This allows you to keep your eyes on the road, where they belong.

There are many accessories available for GPS navigation systems. You can, for example, buy software, GPS holders to mount your system to your dashboard or windshield, memory cards, cigarette lighter adapters, antennas, and Bluetooth.

When buying a GPS navigation system, you should consider such factors as screen size and whether you need a color or monochrome system. Color systems, for example, usually provide greater detail and better readability, but also use more power. GPS is sometimes included in handheld computers (PDAs), so if you're in the market for a PDA, you may consider buying one that includes GPS.

Another factor to consider is the memory capacity of your GPS system. If you'd like more than the basic mapping software, you may want to consider buying a system that has additional memory capacity, such as space for a removable CompactFlash card. It's a good investment to buy a navigation system that has voice prompts, so you won't have to look at the screen while you're driving.

Quick Guide to GPS Systems

If you've heard of automotive GPS systems, then you've heard of Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom. These are the three big companies in the marketplace. And the collectively control about 90% of the market share. Their products all have their strengths and weaknesses, however.

Although Magellan was the original GPS company, Garmin took away a large part of their market share through excellent engineering and a commitment to quality. They've marketed themselves as the high-end company, and the results have paid off. Garmin now owns about 50% of the U. S. market.

Tom Tom, a European company, is a recent arrival on the GPS scene. Just as Garmin did before them, they've taken away market share from Garmin and Magellan. Garmin is still by far the top seller in the U. S., with Tom Tom and Magellan each spliting about 40% of the rest of the market.

So, if you want a GPS, and you want to go with the industry leader, Garmin is the company to choose. Having said that, let's take a brief look at their product line.

What I want to do now, is to give you an overview of their product line, what their systems can do and about how much they cost.

All automotive GPS systems can do the following. They can show you where you are on electronic maps and tell you how to get where you're going with voice prompts. They also have a pre-programmed database of destinations (called Points of Interest), and a few other bells and whistles.

Garmin's entry level device, the nuvi 200, can do all of this and more. What's cool is that at the time of this writing, the nuvi 200 sells for less than $150. Now, the nuvi 200 can do more than just the basics. It can double as a digital picture viewer and an audio book reader, for instance.

A lot of people, however, want more. Let's see what else you can get with a little more money.

Basic GPS systems don't tell you the street names when they tell you where to turn. That takes a more advanced, and more expensive, system. The Garmin nuvi 350 has what's called Text-to-Speech, that is it actually tells you the street name. It also sells for about $200.

Other upgrades you can get are Bluetooth capability, real-time traffic and weather, multi-point routing, and a wider screen. For a few bucks more than the nuvi 350, you can get the nuvi 360, which has Bluetooth. It's got the smaller 3.5-inch screen, however. If you want Bluetooth and the larger screen, you'll have to go with the Garmin nuvi 660.

If you really want to shoot the proverbial moon, then the Garmin 880 might be just the ticket. It's got voice recognition! Which is really cool. It's got a cool price, too. Right now it sells for around $900. But if you want a state of the art GPS, then look no further than the nuvi 880.

How Do I Find the GPS Coordinates of a Location

There are many coordinate systems available in mathematics. These aim at locating without ambiguity a given in regard to the origins of the coordinate system. Many coordinate systems are used in mathematics and physics. For instance, the Cartesian coordinate system and the polar coordinate system are used in science. The General Positioning System (GPS) makes use of coordinate systems based on the latitude and longitude tenets. The longitude of an object in the space is its angular distance (east or west) from a reference meridian, the Greenwich one for instance while the latitude is the angular distance (north or south) from the equator. In order to track an object in the space, we usually need its latitude as well as its longitude. For instance, as soon as a GPS device sends signals to a satellite positioned in the space, the satellite will work your exact coordinates before sending another signal to the receiver of your GPS device. Using this process, the GPS system can determine your exact position, heading and speed.

At the beginning, many GPS systems used to ask to the user to manually input his map coordinate. However, for people not knowing anything about mathematics or even about the suitable coordinate system to be used, they were quickly annoyed. In order to address this setback, GPS system vendors have founded a new way to automatically compute a map coordinate. This way, your GPS device will be assigned the right and suitable map coordinate for your given destination in order to work out your accurate location, speed and heading. However, users may still manually type the map coordinates if they fancy, but they should bear in mind that the device was designed to perform that difficult task. This accounts for its usefulness especially for traveling purposes. Being aware of all this information beforehand is a huge boon for your trip.

Exceptional mathematicians are still allowed to enter their customized GPS map coordinates. However, as the device can perfectly compute its best map coordinates, there is really no need to waste your time doing so. Nowadays, many GPS systems are able to work out map coordinates with a good precision. They can also provide you with useful information for your trip especially if you are heading to a place where you have never been. They can also download breaking news from a bunch of websites.

Due to the fact that GPS systems only work with longitude and latitude, you may need to know what these tenets stand for. You should also bear in mind that the map coordinates are worked out automatically by the device for you shortly when you switch your device on; therefore there is no need to reinvent the wheel! You will find that GPS systems are good travel companions.

Briefly speaking, coordinate systems are used to locate the position of an object in the space. The GPS technology makes use of longitude and latitude mathematical tenets to locate object in the space. Nowadays, many GPS devices offer the outstanding possibility to automatically compute the right GPS map coordinates for your specific destination. Therefore, there is no need to have excellent mathematical skills before enjoying your device. This is amazing, isn't it?

Auto GPS or Handheld GPS?

GPS systems have become invaluable in recent years, helping people across the globe find their way through cities, towns, countryside, mountains, and through middle of nowhere for years. GPS systems are utilized as hand held devices, can be found as a feature on cell phones, and can be mounted in cars. These systems, known as Global Positioning Systems, use satellite signals to define locations and destinations in the map databases of these devices. Each satellite completes one orbit around the Earth every 12 hours, and they carry an atomic clock, transmitting a position signal and a time signal that is picked up by the GPS receiver. This allows the unit to perform all kinds of necessary calculations to arrive at a fixed location, usually accurate to within about 50 feet.

There are two main types of GPS receivers for consumers, the handheld kind and the kind for autos. Although the two kinds serve the same purpose, they are very different in most ways. First, handheld units that many people use outdoors while hiking, biking, and the like, are made to resist the elements wind, rain, ice, humidity, etc. They are usually made of water resistant material or rubber to absorb shock if it is dropped. They are smaller than auto GPS units and should be comfortable to hold with one hand. The display screens on the handheld units are smaller than vehicle units, and a common issue for the handheld gizmos is that they require substantial battery life to operate.

Auto GPS units are commonly larger than the handheld ones. They are portable also, but do not cooperate well when out for a hike. They are not waterproof or water resistant, and the larger screens make them quirky and heavy. The big screen also sucks the life out of the battery quickly, but fortunately almost all models can plug right in to the cigarette lighter adapter. Many of them talk to the user, giving audio directions and using highway and road maps. Handheld units only come with basic maps, if they come with a map system at all. So, if you are trying to decide whether to get a handheld unit or an Auto GPS system, weigh the pros and cons of each, then as a final judgment call, figure out if you need directions more often when you hike and bike or if you get lost while driving more.

There are many companies that manufacture GPS systems for cars. Some of them are made by companies such as Garmen, Jensen, and Magellan. From big time household brand names to the less well known guys, GPS makers continue to add features and gadgets to the systems that make consumers ooh and aah at the technology, even while driving.

TomTom NV is a leading manufacturer of personal navigation products and services. TomTom products are popular for their ease of use right out of the box. The company has established itself as being relentless when it comes to innovation. TomTom recently released a robust new tool that is highly practical for fleet tracking, TomTom WORK. This article discusses the features of this amazing, innovative fleet tracking software.

Working for you

TomTom WORK is a complete fleet tracking solution. It has three key components: LINK, GO, and WEBFLEET. TomTom LINK is a small unit placed inside all fleet vehicles. Using GPS technology, these units allow users to conveniently track where each vehicle is. Other important data can be sent via GPRS to a central office.

TomTom GO comes in two models, the TomTom GO 710 and the TomTom GO 510. These award-winning units provide individual drivers with a personal navigation system. The GO units can also be used as communication devices so that drivers can coordinate with the main office.

The most important component of the TomTom WORK fleet tracking solution is the WEBFLEET. This is the service component of the WORK solution that is generally utilized in the company’s main office. It is discussed further in the next section.

TomTom WEBFLEET

The TomTom WEBFLEET component is a market-leading, web-based fleet tracking service. It is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via a computer with Internet connection.

WEBFLEET is highly interactive. Using up-to-date maps, users can see the exact locations of all their vehicles on one screen. Users have a choice of two different sets of maps. They can use TomTom WEBFLEET maps, which are updated by the TomTom community. Users can also use satellite maps, which show street level details. By knowing where their fleet vehicles are in real time, companies can allocate their jobs more efficiently. The TomTom WEBFLEET fleet tracking application even shows up-to-date traffic details, so companies can plan ahead and find ways to avoid traffic pileups.

The WEBFLEET fleet tracking software features a highly intuitive user interface. Tasks have been grouped together for easy access. Users can conveniently interact with map screens via drag-and-drop or by using the mouse to zoom in and out.

TomTom WORK success

TomTom WORK has seen widespread success since its release in mid-2008. The fleet tracking solution has allowed TomTom to forge a number of new business partnerships. Scotia Gas Network (SGN), for example, a UK-based gas distribution company, has awarded TomTom with a contract to supply fleet tracking solution for 1,500 vehicles operated by SGN. Each vehicle will be fitted with a TomTom LINK vehicle tracking device and a GO satellite navigation screen.

NationLink wireless, a company that provides full-service wireless solutions is another company that has wisely decided to partner with TomTom. NationLink feels that, with TomTom WORK, they will have more options to offer their clients. NationLink plans to offer combined solutions that include in-vehicle navigation, fleet tracking and office-to-field communication.

TomTom GO 730

Features
•New premium look with a high-quality finish, expanded map coverage and comes pre-installed with the latest navigation features.
•TomTom Map Share technology: enabling users to make updates and corrections to their own maps instantly and to benefit from improvements made by other users, completely free of charge. New Map Share features include the ability to change turn restrictions and posted road speeds.
•Voice address input so that users can drive to millions of cities and street names by simply announcing the address of their destination.
•Clear voice instructions and text-to-speech to enable street names, places, traffic alerts and SMS messages to be read aloud as part of the spoken instructions.
•Large 4.3 inch touch screen with new generation icons and an updated user interface to navigate drivers to their destination even more easily.
•Enhanced hands-free calling with high-quality sound system via Bluetooth to allow drivers to keep their eyes firmly on the road while making phone calls in the car.
•Extensive safety features, including the 'Help Me' menu that give drivers direct access to emergency services and roadside assistance.
•Built-in FM Transmitter to play music and navigation instructions seamlessly over the car stereo.
•New smart & fun extras to personalize users' devices, including recording your own driving instructions, view documents, exchange positions via SMS and Bluetooth wireless technology and select a favorite car icon on the screen.

IGolf Neo GPS Review

If you are on the market for a golf GPS unit, I would strongly suggest looking at the iGolf Neo GPS unit. The iGolf Neo is a perfect unit for a majority of the golfers as it provides the necessary distances to the Front, Center and Back of the green along with providing the capability to measure shot distances.

Affordability

This is the lowest priced golf gps unit on the market today and costs $150 at retail. It requires a 1 yr subscription to the iGolf website to download course maps, but it allows you to save the course maps on your laptop for infinite usage unlike other golf GPS systems. You are allowed to download 100 course maps for the 1 year subscription price which is a lot of courses for the average golfer. After the first year, you don't have to renew the subscription if you have downloaded all of the courses that you need.

Usability

The user interface is very intuitive and you will be able to use this device without even reading the instructions. There are 6 buttons on the device allowing you to easily navigate around the menus.

Features

The features on the unit are perfect for the average golfer. The unit will provide distances to the Front, Back and Center of the green. It also allows you to make up to 4 custom locations per hole for bunkers, and dogleg distances. The unit also has a shot distance function, so that you can calculate the exact shot distance of any club.

If you want to map out a course on your own, this device will allow you to do that and also backup your course mapping back to your computer for future use.

Accuracy

The accuracy of the unit is very good. I tested this unit with a friend of mine who was using the SkyCaddie SG2. The distances shown were within 1 to 2 yards at almost all of the tests that we performed.

Conclusion

I would strongly suggest purchasing the iGolf Neo for you golf GPS unit. From the price point, to the features everything is perfectly aligned to the everyday golfer.

The Many Uses Of GPS

The GPS (Global Positioning System) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System that enables a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed, direction, and time with the help of precise microwave signals. It was developed by the United States Department of Defense, and was christened officially as NAVSTAR GPS. Generally GPS is widely used around the globe as a useful tool for map-making, land surveying, commerce, and scientific uses. It is also an ingredient product in the scientific study of earthquakes, and synchronization of telecommunications networks. It is through three or more than three GPS satellites, the GPS calculates position.

GPS technology is divided into three major segments; (1)- space segment (SS), (2)- control segment (CS), and (3)- user segment (US). To calculate the position by a GPS receiver, it requires the current time, the position of the satellite and the measured delay of the received signal. The position accuracy is basically dependent on the satellite position and signal delay. With the help of higher-chip-rate P(Y) signal, position accuracy can be improved. Assuming the same 1% bit time accuracy, the high frequency P(Y) signal results in accuracy of about 30 centimeters.

Atmospheric conditions can play an important role in the speed of GPS signals. Any inconsistency in the atmospheric condition can affect the speed of the GPS signals as they pass through the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere can affect the speed of the GPS signals as they pass through the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere.

The US decided to develop GPS during the cold war. The launching of Sputnik by the Soviet Union motivated NASA for the development of this project to trace the movements of the satellite Sputnik which later started using for civilian purposes. In the present days the purposes of GPS ranges from path finding for drivers to gathering of information on climatic conditions.

How Could a GPS Vehicle Tracking Device Automatically Prevent You Getting a Ticket?

Using a tracking device on a car used to be a way to find it if it were stolen. But now this is just one small use a tracking device has. There are now many reasons people have for installing tracking devices. They are used by the police, by private investigators, and also by parents, (this has been a fast growing trend). GPS Vehicle Tracking Devices could also be used to monitor a vehicles speed and prevent it from breaking the speed limit.

Some GPS devices can automatically tell what the speed limit is where the vehicle is travelling and if the vehicle goes over the speed limit by a certain amount of miles per hour, then it will sound an alert to the driver.

Parents find these GPS vehicle tracking devices very comforting at the time when their teenager starts to do their driving on their own. The parents will not only know where their child is driving to, but they can also feel confident that if their teenager drives faster than they are supposed to, then the device will sound an alert as if its mom or dad's voice was saying slow down.

Over the internet and in physical retail locations, there are many types of GPS vehicle tracking devices that have different qualities about them and can range anywhere from $199.00 up to $700.00 and even more depending on what type of tracking needs to be done and who is doing the tracking.

Private investigators and police are amongst those that spend the most money on GPS vehicle tracking devices but the trucking industry is also another big spender due to the fact that they purchase GPS tracking devices in order to keep track of information concerning their fleet. Depending on how large the company is and how many trucks they have in their fleet will determine the amount of money they spend on GPS vehicle tracking.

The trucking companies are able to use these GPS devices in order to know exactly where their trucks are, how fast their trucks have been going, and some of the vehicle trackers can keep the company informed about how the engine is working and when they should do something about a possible problem before there is a breakdown.

GPS vehicle tracking devices have certainly come along way with today's technology and with the ongoing improvements, there will probably come a time in the near future where they will become a standard item on every vehicle.

Find out far more on GPS vehicle management and see if it could save your license.

Vehicle tracking equipment is fast becoming standard and has so many benefits. Don't get left behind.

Get GPS Fleet Tracking And Help Your Small Business

Have you ever thought about ways to improve the efficiency of you small business' fleet? If you have then you should really give GPS fleet tracking a consideration. According to a March 2008 study made by the Aberdeen group small fleets were able to quickly and successfuly employ fleet management solutions that involved GPS technology.

In the report the researches divided fleet sizes into categories based on the size ranges of the fleets. Small fleets had 1 to 10 vehicles, a medium small fleet had 11 to 50, a medium fleet had anywhere from 51 to 250, a medium large had 251 to 1000, and a large fleet was considered on that had in excess of 1000 vehicles.

In addition to the different fleet size the report also tried to measure the different reasons that companies desired to employ GPS fleet tracking. The top reason mentioned by small fleets was a desire to create positive customer interactions. This response was listed by a commanding majority of the studies respondents (73%).

The different business see customer satisfaction as a key factor for their business. They wanted to generate repeat customers as well as create word-of-mouth marketing through the experience that they give their customers, whether it be an ahead of schedule delivery or an on-time service representative.

But this was by no means the only reason business wanted to find a fleet managmenet solution. These other reasons include a desire to improve response times for service or delivery calls (57%), mitigate the rising costs of fuel and other fleet maintenance related expenses (46%), increase overall productivty of workers (41%), and to improve the longevity of vehicles by reducing overall wear-and-tear on the fleet (16%).

The Aberdeen report had many interesting findings, but the one particularly interesting to small fleets (1-10 vehicles) was that fleets of this size have a better success rate with implementing GPS technology and seeing rapid benefits than large fleets (1000+ vehicles). The report states that small fleets were able to realize and increase of 25% in the amount of work orders that can be completed. The math is simple - more work orders = more revenue generated by your fleet. Who doesn't want their fleet to make more money?

Most fleets saw these types of results two years after implementation. To give a point of reference, large fleets only saw an increase in efficiency of 8%.

Small fleets also saw a significant increase in the abilities of technicians to arrive to their destinations on time. They saw this increase by 46% over a two year period. You can imagine how this might have impacted the satisfaction of the customers serviced.

When it boils down to it though, only you can really decide what will be best for you company's fleet. However, it is very likely that some form of GPS technology, whether it be simple navigation devices or the more complex fleet tracking systems, will benefit your company in a significant way. The benefits of more revenue, increased customer satifaction, and better fleet maintance could translat into a better bottom line for you business.

How GPS Golf Units Can Help Your Game

GPS golf systems are quickly becoming the norm on golf greens all around the world. They are a great benefit to your game, allowing you to have up to date information on the course and course conditions. This information can include electronic maps with advice on hazards, caddy tips (just like a real caddy), weather reports and some GPS gadgets will even track your ball for you.

This information helps a golfer judge the distance between the tee and the hole, how hard to hit the ball and where to avoid water and sand traps. It can even store stats from the players previous games, allowing them to compare and improve their game.

GPS golf units are becoming more and more common. On many courses around the world, you are able to rent a golf cart with a GPS unit attached and in many cases, individual GPS units are more popular the golf cart itself. The number of golf GPS units is increasing and some of the more popular ones are outlined below.

The most popular GPS golf systems include the Garmin GolfLogix System, SkyGolf SkyCaddie SG2.5 System and the Sonocaddie Caddie Range Finder Pro System N030.
The Garmin GolfLogix System is great for beginners because it is a basic and simple device. The screen is easy to view and the information is uncomplicated. You can view all of the green and locate auto hazards. It can also auto advance to your target, making it easier on you. It is even helpful when playing at in poor light because of the backlight on its screen.

The SkyGolf SkyCaddie SG2.5 System is a great choice if you are ready to take your game a step further. It is easy to carry around the course and allows you to improve your game with the many features it holds. It allows you to measure the full depth and shape of the green, even if you are off the fairway. This unit is water resistant so rain will no longer keep you off the green.

The Sonocaddie Caddie Range Finder Pro System N030 is the most advertised of the three. In fact, it has been called "the most advanced personal system on the market today". It is very compact and fits in your palm, making it easy to carry. It gives you information on precise distances and hazards. But perhaps the most impressive feature is that the golfer has the ability to store information of thousands of golf courses around the country.

A GPS golf system is rapidly becoming a must-have among novice and expert golfers alike. Why let your golfing buddies have that advantage over you? Get your own GPS golf system and improve your game in no time.

Where to Find the Best Price Garmin 760 (Summary of Features)

Garmin 760 Car Global Positioning Systems include many "must have" entertainment and travel tools including MP3 player, and audio book player.

Features

Loaded and wide, nuvi 760 has it all - advanced navigation features, a widescreen display, preloaded maps, an FM transmitter, hands-free calling, traffic alerts and more. Plan Ahead nuvi 760 includes advanced navigational features to take the worry out of traveling. It retains the previous Garmin products' ability to integrate powerful features inside an easy to use interface and provides almost instant routing out of the box. There are several other Garmin models with the same screen and other features, but I found that the main difference which will either justify the extra expense for the 760 (or not) is whether you want to create and store routes with multiple waypoints.

Screen

Traffic issues are displayed on the main map screen with different colors and an appropriate traffic icon on your route as you approach them. There is plenty of traffic related detail on a separate screen if you want to access it. Excellent maps, directions, signal locking, screen brightness/clarity, and timely voice prompts. The large screen is easy to read and shows details clearly and accurately. Consumer Reports GPS navigator ratings are based on a battery of tests that compare each system's ease of use, including the ease of entering in the destination, the quality and clarity of the spoken and on screen information, routing options, routing time, and portability. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nuvi takes you there with 2-D or 3-D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions.

Download Free Maps GPS - Enhancing Your GPS Device With Additional GPS Maps

Several General Positioning System (GPS) maps are already provided with your GPS device when you buy it. Because these maps are offered for free, there is an overhead in getting them. Indeed, these maps do not allow any tweaking in order to meet your specific needs. Another drawback of these built-in maps is their lack of knowledge about your given destination. For instance, let assume you want to travel to Philippines; it is obvious that you will appreciate details about this location beforehand. If your device was purchased in Brazil, you will be very lucky if it has any knowledge about Philippines. Therefore this GPS map cannot act as a travel aid.

Many GPS devices are used as travelling guides for a trip. Therefore GPS devices have superseded our old map artifacts. You may be wondering how useful a GPS device is. It is obvious that having detailed information about your trip in advanced will only make it more enjoyable, faster, safer and reduce any risks during your trip.

Although there are several programs that can be purchased to install new GPS maps on your device, there are also several free programs that can be used for the same purpose. In order to use these, some software prerequisites should be installed at first. These include the cables of your device. You do not to worry about it because they are included with your device when you purchase it.

They are also many websites that can help you to design our own GPS maps. By customizing your maps, you will be able to pinpoint specific locations you are fond of. These include restaurants, bars, night clubs, schools and so forth. You may add traffic reports in your GPS maps in order to avoid traffic jam during your journey.

Another outstanding benefit of GPS systems is their ability to record several maps. For instance, if you are traveling a lot to the same place, your GPS device can save all your personal information once so that the trip you will not be asked to enter your personal details and preferences.

When you have a GPS system, you may find it easier to have many maps about your trips. This will make your trip very enjoyable. You should therefore spend some time looking at pre-installed maps as well as other amazing features of your system.

Briefly speaking, GPS maps offer you the unique opportunity you explore your final destination without heading there. This is very interesting because it is sometimes recommended to glance at a country before formally deciding to go there. Some GPS maps provide outstanding features such as an unlimited online access to view, print, save aerial pictures. Some of them also come with bunch of programs allowing you to personalize them, add texts, graphics, compute GPS coordinates, upload your GPS coordinates and plot them atop of your maps. Updating new GPS maps to your device can be a very daunting experience. There are available in many shopping centers not for free. If you are looking for free stuff, you should definitely look on the internet as several, interesting maps are available.

Mio C320 Portable Car Navigation System

Mio C320 Portable Car Navigation System, Accessories, Cars, Trucks & Accessories

Choosing a GPS Navigation Unit That Fits You

Gone are the days when the only option you had while traversing unfamiliar roads and terrain was to ask the locals for directions. For you can now use a (global positioning system) GPS-based navigation unit to accomplish the same task without the need to ask local people the directions. A navigation unit for most laymen is a wonder gizmo that will help you to know your position and direct you towards your selected destination.

How does such a navigation unit work?

Well, first simply thank the long and rapid strides technology has taken in many diverse areas. These areas include (i3 conducted) Earth imagery mapping, satellites, GPS-enabled cellphones, and dedicated in-car GPS navigation units.

They also include software (mapping, database, and control), hardware (inertial navigation unit, memory, pocketPCs, and the plethora), database systems, and micro-electronics. You need to also mainly thank the US Department of Defense (DoD) and erstwhile late US President Ronald Reagan.

Coming back, a navigation unit is simply an electronic device that helps you track your route, know your current position, reach a destination, or find how far you are from a specific well-known location. The circuitry in it helps it to locate its position at all times. It works by receiving microwave signals transmitted at certain preset frequencies by a cluster of 32 Navstar-GPS medium Earth orbit US-launched satellites up in the sky.

The signals tell you the coordinates of your (actually that of the navigation unit available with you) current location, wherever in the world you might be, in the air, over the seas, or on land. Moreover, you also have available with your navigation unit a database (in memory) that has already been developed through a process known as mapping.

Using mapping, the database stores the coordinates of all well known locations in nearby areas. Using software to compare your coordinates with those of nearby well known locations, you can also know exactly where your current location is with respect to these well-known landmarks.

Now, a navigation unit (such as the Garmin 2610) is something that you can have built-in into your Lincoln Continental SUV/car dashboard. Alternatively, you can have a navigation unit packaged smartly in your new GPS-enabled Nokia cellphone or simply use a dedicated Garmin etrex navigation unit.

Since everyone carries their cellphone wherever they go it becomes easy for government agencies to locate them. In this way terrorists can be discovered and caught or a criminal's movements traced, or a person in an emergency can be located and reached in hospital in time. Privacy laws are infringed anyway, but see the advantages of a navigation unit. Its advantages far outweigh the small issue of privacy.

The US DoD it was that launched those 24 GNSS (global navigational satellite system) satellites for military purposes, but President Reagan ordered them later to be also used for civilian use. So, next time you hear the word navigation unit, I am sure you would not bat your eyelid.

What is the Best Golf GPS on the Market?

Having done a lot of research and used just about every golf GPS around I am often asked what is the best golf GPS on the market. With technology moving as fast as it does the answer tot his question can change within days.

But let me do my best in helping your decide what is the best golf GPS on the market specific to your requirements.

The initial reasoning behind using a GPS for golf was to give the golfer accurate readings from any position on the golf course to any other position. This basic fundamental has not changed and many golfers use a GPS just for this purpose but since the introduction of the GPS for golf the manufacturers have come up with a variety of features that have even more benefits for golfers.

The following are just some of the features that can be found on today's golf GPS models:

  • Digital scorecards holding a multiple number of player's scores in each round. No more concerns about those soggy cards on wet weather days.

  • Plotting individual points not previously mapped.
  • Colour screens.
  • Recording personal statistics such as fairways and greens in regulation, putts per round etc. for later analysis.
  • Shot distance feature which tells you exactly how far you hit each club in your bag.
  • Number of courses that can be stored on the unit itself. This ranges from 5 to an incredible 20,000.
  • Incredibly clear graphics. One model even offers a video flyover view - its like sitting in a helicopter and flying over the hole.
  • Sophisticated software to show the exact outline of the green. In some cases you can even "move" the pin on the green to give and even closer reading than the standard 'front, center or back' of green readings.

Other things to consider when determining what the best golf GPS on the market is for you include:

  • Your budget. The price of dedicated golf GPS models range from $149.95 up to $500.00. However some software is available for use on your mobile phone. This is usually free or a lot cheaper.
  • Annual fee. Some companies offer an annual fee which entitles you to certain benefits. Some don't have an annual plan at all and others are compulsory.
  • Where can the GPS be used? Just about all of them can be used anywhere in the world whilst there are one or two that cater only for the North American market.
  • How large is the course library from which to download courses? Most are pretty extensive and all companies are happy to plot courses on request. As such these libraries are growing daily.
  • How easy is the GPS to use?
  • What is it power source and how long will a full charge last? This can vary quite a lot from model to model. It is important to know you won't run out of power before completing your round.
  • The accuracy of the given distances. This is determined by the method of mapping and by the number of satellites that the unit can access. However most models are accurate enough for the average golfer.
  • Customer service. This is an important issue and one that should not be overlooked. In a highly competitive market if the company is not looking after you when you need assistance it may be time to change.

No doubt I have left a few off but I think you get the picture. The best golf GPS on the market is determined by individual circumstances and everybody is catered for.

New models are coming our regularly and existing models are improved upon with software updates almost quicker than we can play a round of golf. Today's top model may be obsolete in 6 months time - if so is it worth spending a fortune just to have the very best or latest? For some the answer will be "yes" for others it will be "no".

When asked what is the best golf GPS on the market I always tell people to start with a budget. It seems a lot easier to be sort through information and compare models that are within the same price range; comparing apples with apples makes for better and clearer decision making.

Once you have set a budget do not look at anything more expensive. Decide what you want your golf GPS to do; some features are "must haves" whilst others are "would be nice but not essential" and yet some are "under no circumstances". For example you might like a color screen but will not pay an annual fee for the ability to download courses worldwide when you only play three different courses a year.

If you are looking for a gift for a friend and cannot decide which is the best golf GPS on the market then rest assured most will make a perfect gift; but it may be an inconvenience to impose an annual membership on someone. Play safe and buy a GPS without a compulsory annual membership.

What is the best golf GPS on the market? There are several and the answer to this question really depends on individual circumstances.

This website has the most comprehensive comparison chart available on the web. It provides a full review of each of the most popular models and gives recommendations based on budget.

Broadcom Tops New GPS IC Vendor Matrix Ranking

Broadcom has been ranked at the top of the latest Vendor Matrix released by ABI Research.

Atheros Communications and NXP Semiconductors claimed the second and third spots in the company?s new evaluation of worldwide GPS integrated circuit vendors.

The Vendor Matrix is an analytical tool developed by ABI Research to provide a clear understanding of vendors? positions in specific markets.

Vendors are assessed by ABI Research on the important parameters of ?innovation? and ?implementation? across several criteria unique to each vendor matrix.

Principal analyst Dominique Bonte comments, ?Following the acquisition of fabless GPS-specific manufacturer Global Locate last year, Broadcom became the first GPS chipset vendor with a hosted A-GPS solution and a Wide Area Reference Network for the provision of GPS assistance data. Broadcom?s experience in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, FM radio, and GPS technology puts the company in a good position to compete in the anticipated multiple-RF integrated GPS solutions market, with integrated Bluetooth/GPS chipsets expected to be available in 2009. Broadcom is also the supplier of the GPS-chipset in the new 3G iPhone.?

Following the acquisition of GPS IC manufacturer u-Nav Microelectronics in December 2007, Atheros plans to develop integrated single-die RF solutions that will combine Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

In December 2007, NXP acquired fabless GPS chips manufacturer GloNav in order to enter the hardwired GPS solutions market, planning to target the 3G mobile phone segment, as well as PNDs.

For this particular matrix, under "innovation," ABI Research examined the products multiple RF integration, the firms? RF IC solutions, IC solutions, and Single-Chip Solutions; also evaluated were the products? Wireless Assistance Data Support (A-GPS) and their Satellite-Based Augmentation System Support (SBAS) (Support for EGNOS and WAAS).

Under "implementation," ABI Research scrutinized the following criteria: market share; consumer market focus; professional, industrial, and military market focus, whether the vendors are fabricators (as opposed to fabless) and their key customer wins.

Apple?s Greg Joswiak says iPhone 3G getting turn-by-turn GPS navigation

iphone 3g tomtom GPS navigation softwareThat's right. Turn-by-turn GPS navigation is coming to the iPhone. While David Pogue seems to believe that the iPhone 3G's GPS hardware is incapable of doing turn-by-turn navigation, Apple's own iPod and iPhone marketing director, Greg Joswiak, says that the iPhone 3G should be getting true-blue GPS navigation software in the near-term.

Apple's iPhone team apparently took in to account a veritable grocery list of requested iPhone features, and found that turn-by-turn GPS navigation is a high-priority. Cut-and-paste functionality? Not so much - we probably won't be seeing official cut/paste on the iPhone anytime soon. But, it's not out of the question in the longer-term.

And, with GPS navigation software getting ironed out for the iPhone 3G, we're sure the masses won't mind having to wait for true cut-and-pates to hit the iPhone. Perhaps those "complicated issues" that Apple is working out for the GPS software is related to TomTom's push to bring their nav application to the iPhone 3G.

Stay tuned. We'll be keeping an ear to the ground on this one.

Update:

Apparently, Mr. Pogue's belief that the Apple iPhone 3G GPS hardware wasn't up to the task of tracking GPS coordinates at turn-by-turn resolutions is rooted in a conversation he had with Apple's iPhone tech-lead. Stay tuned for updates…

Fix your iPhone 3G GPS problems - 3G network issues with iPhone GPS

iPhone 3G GPSThe new GPS hardware in the iPhone 3G seems to be having some trouble when not connected to the AT&T 3G network. iPhone Atlas reports that some users are complaining of inaccurate GPS positioning when the 3G data setting (Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G) option is switched to "ON."

The iPhone 3G uses aGPS (assisted GPS), which means that the cellular network aids in positioning the handset, giving the GPS hardware less number-crunching to deal with. That means you get super-fast GPS lock-on times. But, it seems that some iPhones are getting conflicting data from the 3G data network and their built-in GPS receivers, leading to incorrect GPS positioning.

So, for those of you with wonky GPS positioning on the iPhone 3G, try this fix:

  • Navigate to Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G and toggle to "OFF"

  • Locate yourself using the iPhone 3G's GPS receiver

  • Navigate to Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G and toggle to "ON"

You should now have accurate GPS positioning information. Leave a comment if this worked or didn't work for you.

Apple iPhone 2.1 Gets Directional GPS

Apple iPhone 2.1 Gets Directional GPS

Apple's iPhone 2.1 beta code has shown that Core Location is now able to recognize the cardinal direction of an iPhone 3G in addition to its technology, making directional GPS a very distinct possibility. On a separate note, it has been confirmed that Apple will be implementing a rough version of its background push notification service in the 2.1 firmware. Word has it that the 2.1 update will be released this September at the same time as the push notification service, but until then, we'll just have to be happy with iPhone 2.0 and wait patiently.

Apple iPhone 2.1 beta firmware points to turn-by-turn GPS navigation, background push notification

The recently released iPhone 2.1 firmware beta has, like many beta firmwares before it, been a rewarding source of potentially upcoming iPhone features and functionality. Previous iPhone firmware betas have led to the speculation, and eventual implementation, of iPhone features like the iPhone iTunes remote, geo-tagging photos, and character-recognition, just to name a few.

With the new iPhone 2.0 OS beta, iPhone developers have uncovered yet another morsel of hope for enhanced GPS functionality. Following on Joswiak's announcement that Apple is working to bring turn-by-turn GPS navigation to the iPhone, which contradicted David Pogue's assertion that the iPhone's GPS hardware wasn't up to such a task, the iPhone 2.1 beta has shown an updated Core Location library that is capable of tracking the iPhone's direction and velocity of movement.

iPhone 2.1 OS beta screenshot

Additionally, it seems that Apple is starting to build-out their highly-anticipated background push notification service. The nascent development of the background notification confirms Apple's intent to roll-out a push-data delivery system that would allow native iPhone applications to receive alerts, messages, and other data in while inactive. Rather than run multiple applications in a true multi-tasking environment, Apple's push background data will deliver similar multi-tasking performance in a more streamlined and efficient solution. The ability to deliver data to dormant applications allows the iPhone to reduce power-consumption, as well as allowing the iPhone to run faster, by not having to allot processing resources to unused applications.

The new Core Location code is suspected to be the first step in enabling turn-by-turn GPS navigation on the iPhone 3G. Location data like direction and speed-tracking are essential to enhanced GPS features, and building such features in to the latest iPhone 2.1 firmware beta is likely Apple's preparation for releasing turn-by-turn GPS functionality. And, the prospect of having the push background notification service up and running in the near-term is indeed exciting.

JGUI?s GPS.Friend helps Windows Mobile users find each other

GPS.Friend

JGUI, the same folks who prepared that ultra-cool Vista theme for Windows Mobile, have recently released a new application called GPS.Friend. The idea behind the app is simple - to allow users to find their friend, child or whoever from their mobile phone. Sure, you can use a service/app like Loopt for the purpose, but I guess this is the easier way. The only downside is that a person whom you’re trying to locate also needs to have GPS.Friend installed on its Windows Mobile smartphone (other platforms are not supported at the moment).

Here’s how it works:

GPS.Friend reads your current GPS location and asks your friend’s phone for his/her coordinates to match both locations. Once both locations are determined, the application will display them on a map (downloaded from Google Maps) and calculate the distance between the two. And that’s it, you can take it from there…

GPS.Friend is easy to use and with only few taps, you are ready to go. It works on both Windows Mobile Professional and Standard edition smartphones and supports all screen resolutions.

Free version of GPS.Friend allows you to get your own current location or ask someone’s only one time a day. The full version with unlimited location requests is available for 17.25 EUR. Additional licenses (after one is purchased), cost 9.95 EUR.

Rumor: iPod Touch to get 64GB, GPS?

Rumor: iPod Touch to get 64GB, GPS?

We’re already told you that Apple will refresh its iPod line soon, which isn’t exactly unexpected anyways, but there is mounting speculation that the iPod Touch will get 64GB and possibly a GPS. Both appear plausible, as an increase in storage is almost mandatory and it fits into the semi-conductor economics. If the new iPod Touch uses a close hardware platform as the iPhone 3G, it would logically feature a GPS. And believe me, if there was a decent GPS navigation app, a $249 iPod touch (8GB) with GPS could do some real damage to stand-alone GPS units…

IPhone 3G GPS

One great feature of the new iPhone 3G is GPS. It didn't take me too long to figure it out. The feature is used through the Maps application. You simply identify where you are going by typing in the address, then select, "Get Directions" which it will map out the shortest distance. When you are ready to go, select "Start" and the 3G network will locate you on the map using a pulsing blue dot. As you move, so will the dot. It's definitely pretty cool.

I did notice a couple fixes that would make it better. One would be a voice command to prompt the user to turn or when a turn is coming. Another would be to have the map rotate to that you are always traveling up on the screen. Currently, you have to turn your iPhone after you make a directional change if you want to be moving in the same direction as the blue dot.

The commercial for the Instinct says that it has voice command GPS. At this point I would say that is its biggest competitive advantage over the iPhone 3G. It wouldn't take much for the Instinct's GPS to be more responsive than the iPhone's. I noticed that sometimes I would be passing streets that the iPhone GPS displayed I hadn't yet. I would say the feature is definitely useful, however, if I were planning a long road trip I definitely wouldn't trust it to get me there without a few mistakes along the way.

However, if your Garmin Marine GPS system hits the sea, all you need to is fish it out and put it back to work for you.

The Garmin Marine autopilot GPS units are equally cool too, with an easy to use interface that even the technological novice can figure out. No matter what the weather is, as soon as you hook up your boat to the Garmin Marine autopilot system, you will surely be able to get to your destination of choice.

Quite possibly the coolest Garmin Marine gadget is the fish finder, which will show you where the fish are before you even have a chance to cast your bait into the water. Undoubtedly, this can save you a ton of time and personal anguish, and is particularly useful for commercial fishermen who take tourists out to see on fishing expeditions. As an added bonus, Garmin Marine devices are also increasingly affordable.

Navigation Systems like the Garmin Handheld GPS

Not many things can say that they have played a part in changing the way of American life, but the development of the handheld GPS has done just that. For years, people have been relying on trip tickets, word of mouth directions, or even printed out maps and directions from the internet. These have always been inconvenient ways to travel in the car because not everyone has always had access to the internet, which caused them to be at a severe disadvantage, constantly having to stop at the nearest gas station to ask for directions. This method could and did add hours on to road trips and it was just not an efficient way to travel, but it was the only way Americans knew. Scientists and developers realized that this was becoming a huge pain, so they developed what we now know as the handheld GPS.

A handheld GPS is a compact navigation system that you can take anywhere with you; it is guaranteed to completely revolutionize the way you travel on the road. One of the best things about the handheld GPS is that there are no monthly charges like there are for services like OnStar. Also, it does not need to access the internet at all so there is no need to stop and find a place that has a wireless internet service. Once you buy a handheld GPS system it is yours forever and you can upgrade your package whenever you like.

Handheld GPS systems use a network of satellites that are already in orbit over the earth to relay information to your GPS system. This will enable to pinpoint your exact location at the time as well as map out how to reach your destination safely. Handheld GPS systems also have a certain amount of internal memory built in to them, so this allows you to store the details from previous trips in case you need to consult them for any reason. Some handheld GPS units also give you information about the weather and traffic of the area you are traveling in to help you decide if you should take an alternate route.

There are many different products to choose from, so it is important to shop around and find the one that will fit your needs perfectly. Some ones to look at are the Garmin handheld GPS, Lowrance iFinder and the Magellan eXplorist. Do the research on the product you want; you will be happy you did when you set out for your next adventure on the road.
