There are no charges for the download, but customers have to sign up for a data plan to get the airtime needed to retrieve maps, and traffic information with cell phone gps.

You are looking to buy a GPS tracking watch and want to know who makes the best one. The answer to that may be simple, there are only three well known companies making them; Garmin, Timex and Suunto. That's not to say there aren't other companies out there making cheap knock offs, but we won't focus on them.

Some might say "What about Casio? They are a well known company." That is true and they make some fine products but they no longer make a GPS watch so that leaves Garmin, Timex and Suunto.

When looking at the models being offered by each company you will find a variety of available features. I think it is important to mention what these watches won't do since there may be some misconceptions out there.

Many of us have, or have seen a GPS system in a car or boat. These are really neat gadgets to have and can be a real time saver especially for those who travel extensively for work or pleasure. These units display your position on a map and may include landmarks like restaurants, gas stations, etc.

GPS watches have very small display screens so the mapping feature is not practical. Neither is the voice feature present to tell you when to turn!

GPS tracking watches use satellites to pinpoint a position, then with continuing updates of the position, they display data for speed, distance, elevation and more, depending on the model. Options might include a heart rate monitor or cycling cadence tracker.

You may quickly see a couple of important variations in the way the companies package their GPS watches. In all cases, the systems use a GPS receiver and a digital time piece to carry out the calculations. Being a watch they all offer the display of data in what appears to be a wrist watch although sometimes quite large.

The GPS receiver may be contained within the watch or, separately, strapped to the arm or possibly mounted on a belt.

It would be wise to give this issue some thought before making a purchase. I would prefer to have the watch and GPS receiver self contained and worn like a traditional watch, but opinions vary.

Garmin has the Forerunner 205, 305 and 405 which are all-in-one models, having the appearance of a digital wristwatch but of larger size. They also offer the Forerunner 101 and 102 which use a Velcro strap around the wrist but have the appearance more similar to wearing an iPod.

The Garmin line uses a receiver that is built in and wraps around the wristband, a bit, to keep it oriented to the sky for better reception. The units also include a USB to share data with your PC. An A/C battery charger is used to top off the battery which generally provide about 8 to 10 hours of tracking use.

Timex has been making watches almost forever and has offered athletic oriented models for decades. They use a separate watch / GPS receiver approach unlike Garmin. This does have some advantages, including the ability to wear the watch everyday since it is small enough to be practical. When the time arises you simply turn on and secure the separate GPS receiver and you are ready to go. Timex also offers an almost endless array of athletic watches.

The third manufacturer is Suunto which as you might guess offers several models. They generally have the appearance resembling a typical digital wristwatch. The GPS receiver is contained in a separate wireless unit so the watch can remain very compact. Typical options are; altimeter, barometer, countdown timers heart rate monitors etc.

The technology evolves continuously so smaller, cheaper models will likely become available in the near future. It will also be interesting to see if other companies will join in and offer their own line of GPS tracking watches.

Using GPS Tracking Devices to Reduce Search and Rescue Costs

Modern day GPS tracking devices can and should be used to reduce the cost of carrying out expensive search and rescue (SAR) operations. The new Spot GPS satellite messenger is a relatively cheap and reliable GPS tracking device that just about anyone can afford and operate. It is not uncommon for a major SAR operation to cost several hundred thousand dollars to complete. In many cases the lost individuals are billed for these expenses but in many cases much of the costs are not recoverable.

As a wildlife officer with the US Fish and Wildlife Service I was trained to be SAR or search and rescue specialist. One of the refuges I was assigned to was a 95,000 acre wild area that included a 25,000 acre designated wilderness area. Each year the public would enter these areas to hunt, fish, bird watch and hike. This of course was before the common use of GPS tracking devices.

At least once a year we would be alerted that an individual or group had not returned to the location they had started from. This would cause us to mobilize our search and rescue team and begin the task of searching for the missing. Initially only local Federal, State and local resources would be employed to do the planning and searching activities. Never the less the effort required valuable resources to be expended in the effort.

If the initial search efforts failed to locate the lost parties then I or my boss would climb into our small aircraft and begin an aerial search using standard grid work and our Loran receiver. We also had a military GPS receiver that was used as a backup. Hand held GPS units were not available to us at the time. Frequently the US Coast Guard was asked to assist in the search as well. In some case search dogs were also employed. All of this effort was very costly to all agencies involved.

In some cases the lost individuals are never found. This is a catastrophe not only for the victims' families but also for the agencies who must continue the prolonged search efforts. In many cases a prolonged SAR effort can cause severe financial and personnel problems for the agencies involved.

Given the new GPS tracking device capabilities that are available today it may be wise for federal and state land management agencies to require people who use these land resources to purchase and carry a GPS tracking device similar to the Spot GPS Messenger and Acer GPS units. They are simple to use and will not only reduce the cost of SAR efforts but also increase the chance locating lost and injured victims. The Spot GPS tracking device is strictly a GPS based system and does not depend on unreliable cell phone technology or coverage.

The spot GPS unit is especially suited to this cause. It can allow the user to let family and friend's the operator's location and condition on a 24 hour basis. It also allows the user to ask his family or designated contacts for help without notifying SAR agencies. In case of a real emergency the spot will notify the GEOS International Emergency Response Center. They in turn will notify local SAR resources of your exact location. The Spot GPS system will work on about 80 percent of the land mass of the earth.

The cost of conducting SAR operations is increasing each year. Its now time to reduce these costs by requiring all individuals entering remote federal lands to carry either an Acer or Spot GPS tracking device. This new requirement will save both lives and money.

What GPS Do I Buy?

So you want to buy a GPS. Choices, yes - staggering numbers as of late. So what should you do? We recommend buying Factory Remanufactured units.

So what's the logic behind this choice?

There are many reasons, lets examine a few.

1. Price - New verses Factory Remanufactured can be as much as a 50% savings or more.

2. Warranty - New verses Factory Remanufactured? Guess what? Exactly the same at 1 year.

My experience with the Garmin 205 has been very good. To begin, the unit is quick to lock on to the satellites and begin tracking. If you turn it on and head outside for a run it should be up and running long before you finish your basic stretching. We have found that it will lock into enough satellites to function indoors if there are windows in close proximity. Outdoors the signal acquisition and ability to remain locked into a signal is very good. Accuracy was also very good; the unit can detect small movements of just a couple of feet. When the elapsed distance was checked against a known measured mile the accuracy was within about 15 feet, much better than most of us would ever need.

You might be inclined to compare the Garmin 201 with the 205 and that is where the 205 really shines. The 205 is a "watch", the size is certainly larger than a typical digital watch but since it is not intended for every day use this is not an issue. The 201 by contrast, is more like wearing an iPod or pager. It is a rectangular shaped unit which is strapped to the arm with a Velcro strap. The 205 uses a wristband made of rubber so it will be easier to keep clean and will not absorb perspiration. The buttons are simple and intuitive, enough so, that most people will quickly become accustomed to using it.

Computer software is available for use in downloading your GPS data which allows complete review of your workout. You can display in chart format how fast you were going, position, elevation, etc. and it also can be displayed on a road map. The 205 itself doesn't have a map feature like you would see with a GPS in a car. It does include a very basic map which is referred to as "Bread Crumb" mapping where it illustrates where you have been with a dotted line. This feature could be helpful to return to your starting position if used in an unfamiliar area.

Instant readings are a relative thing with any type of GPS unit. The slight lag in updating is well within a reasonable time period and never gave us any concern. If overhead trees, roofs, tall buildings etc, are too dense the signal can be affected or lost but we found the 205 to be quite good in operating in moderate tree cover. The 205 maintained signals at least as well as any other GPS unit we have used and if a the signal is lost it is reacquired quickly once clear of the obstacle.

Most people should be quite satisfied with this unit provided that a heart rate monitor is not desired. If the heart rate monitor is desired and we think it should be, for any serious training the Garmin forerunner 305 would be a better choice. Having said that, we have seen prices discounted well below $200 for the 205, making it a great option for a GPS tracking watch.

Air Semiconductor touts low-power GPS solution

While digital camera makers are eying GPS as a feature that can help differentiate their next-generation products, power consumption will be an issue makers must address, according to Stephen Graham, VP of marketing at England-based GPS chip startup Air Semiconductor.

GPS solutions have traditionally targeted automotive applications, where power consumption is not an issue, and standard GPS chips consume between 50-100mA, Graham pointed out. Air Semiconductor, on the other hand, is developing a GPS chip that consumes 1mA on average. Therefore, although GPS chips are making their way into battery-operated solutions (mostly handsets), the technology is not always active, as the power drain would be too great. The GPS is only activated when using specific applications, such as when calling emergency services (when used in handsets), Graham explained.

Using a model where the GPS remains inactive in the digital camera market would pose some problems, as it would take time for the GPS receiver to calculate a position fix (handsets use assisted GPS through the cell network) and many photos are taken indoors, where it may be difficult to get a satellite fix, Graham argued. However, because of its low power consumption, the Air Semiconductor solution can always remain active, which would allow users get an approximate location when they are indoors, or get an instant reading when outdoors.

The Air Semiconductor solution conserves power by trading off power consumption for accuracy when accuracy is not needed. For example, a general location within a few hundred meters is always maintained when the camera is off, but when an application is activated, such as when a picture is taken, the GPS will provide accurate location up to a few meters.

Graham indicated Air Semiconductor is receiving good feedback from digital camera makers, but the product will not be available for mass production until the third quarter of 2009.The solution will be an SoC, whose functionality will including RF, DSP and power management. The chip will be manufactured by TSMC on a 0.13-micron process.

Named after a state in the good ol' US of A, there is no official image of the device just yet. It will probably share some attributes with the Colorado series, although the chances of retaining the touch wheel interface would be slim. Motorola Survey Reveals Significant Savings From Mobile Worker Use of GPS-Enabled Technologies

Reductions in Industry-Wide Fuel and Labor Expenses Could Save Enterprises Billions

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- North American Information Technology (IT) decision makers within the transportation, manufacturing and trucking/warehousing industries stated that global positioning system (GPS) technologies are an essential tool for their mobile workforce, according to a recent survey commissioned by Motorola Inc. In addition to the cost savings, locationing applications were credited with improving the organization of employee routes, giving companies the ability to know precisely where their employees are at any given time and allowing them to examine routing scenarios before implementation.

Surveyed enterprises indicated GPS solutions enable the mobile workforce to spend less time in traffic or finding routes, while increasing the amount of time spent with new or existing customers. In fact, when asked why they would consider investing in GPS or other new technologies those surveyed cited customer service as the number one priority.

The survey identified other key applications -- navigation for improved on-time performance and route optimization. NDrive G800 gives Sat image overlay for GPS!

My favourite independent Mobile kit retailer, Expansys, mailed me the other day to let me know about this cheeky new bit of kit from NDrive. In a neat development, the G800 is a Sat Nav unit that is able to utilise Sat imaging, rather than the crude vector graphics we are used to normally.

Apparently 29 major cities are mapped currently, and I'm sure this will improve over time - and from the looks of things, you can decide your perspective on the viewing angle, much as you can zoom in/out with most Sat Nav units.

Another Motorola RAZR - AT&T Motorola RAZR 2 V9x does GPS

If there's one thing that's not going to help Motorola claw their way back to any sort of respectable level of success, it's pumping out another RAZR handset. But, that isn't necessarily going to stop Moto from doing whatever they please.

Case in point, the Motorola RAZR 2 V9x for AT&T. The Black-clad RAZR2 V9x is actually a sleek looking flip (clamshell), and the addition of AT&T Navigator GPS service makes the AT&T-branded Moto RAZR2 V9x a decidedly more attractive option than its RAZR forebears.
