CDT GPS Looks Different

CDT GPS Looks Different

Talk about a radically different GPS navigation system with portable media player capabilities - the CDT GPS PMP (so many Three Letter Acronyms!) amazingly retails for just $102. It features a 3" touch screen display and does the whole gamut of audio and video formats. Interesting to note the hand grips located at the side though, does this mean you're getting this for a fast driver since you'll be holding onto the CDT GPS PMP for dear life while giving directions to your destination?

Garmin DC30 GPS Dog Collar

Garmin DC30 GPS Dog Collar

It is a well known fact never to leave your dog unattended whenever you take it out for a walk, but sometimes even the most vigilant of us could lose our concentration during crucial moments, resulting in a pooch who desires to forge its own destiny outside the comforts of its kennel back home. Tracking down a wayward dog can be a pretty tricky thing, what more in a vast city. The Garmin DC30 GPS dog collar (spotted by us at CES07) will definitely provide you with the relevant peace of mind, capable of tracking up to 10 dogs simultaneously. It can last anywhere between 17 and 36 hours on a single charge, and will retail for $199.99 individually or $649.99 as part of an Astro 220 combo. Just make sure Lassie doesn't venture beyond the 7-mile radius though in order for the DC30 to be effective.

Mio Knight Rider GPS Video

We told you about Mio’s upcoming Knight Rider GPS (see Mio Knight Rider photos) but the synthetic voice of Kitt (William Daniels) being the star of the show, there’s nothing like a good video (with audio!) to get a better idea. The GPS will ship with a database of hundreds of pre-recorded names so that you don’t have to rename yourself into “Michael”. A subsequent update will add even more names (300 or so). It will cost $269 and will be on the shelves on August 8.

Archos GPS System Peek

Archos GPS System Peek

The people from Archoslounge has finally finished reviewing the Archos GPS system, with the 605 WiFi being the portable media of choice. It is interesting to note that despite being able to mount your Archos 605 on a windshield, chances are you will run into problems trying to read the display in bright sunlight. After all, that's why we have proper personal navigation devices from TomTom that simply work better under such conditions.

Mio Knight Rider GPS, with the voice of KITT

Mio Knight Rider GPS, with the voice of KITT

That’s one feature that other GPS will have a hard time to mimic: Mio has the license to use KITT’s voice. As you can see, the GPS body itself is designed with the Knight Rider theme, thanks to the LED on each side of the screen. Other than that, it is technically very similar to the more recent Mio GPS (read review). For $270, it'll bring you as close to being “Michael” as you can be. Stay tuned and come back on this site for an update.

ETRI GPS System Knows Your Voice

ETRI GPS System Knows Your Voice

ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) just introduced a new voice-recognizing navigation system which will be available at the end of this month in Korea. What makes this differernt from the rest of the GPS systems in the market is the ability to recognize your voice using 'FineDrive Bio' technology courtesy of FineDigital. This new technology has a working vocabulary of 450,000 words - pretty much more than what I know, I reckon. There is the problem of the accuracy though - hopefully it won't be as messed up as Brain Age's "Blue" and "Yellow" speech segments.

Sureshot GPS for Golfers

Sureshot GPS for Golfers

If you're a golfer and are actively looking for a method to lower your handicap, why not give the Sureshot GPS a...well, shot? It knows more than 12,000 courses in and out, giving you an edge no matter where you go golfing. Boasting GPS capability, it will then calculate the distance from tee to green while laying out all the possible hazards for you to see so that you can make the best choice the next time you step up. Of course, it won't do much when it comes to helping straighten out your swing, but at least you get a hint of which club to use in record time. When you're done with your round, the SureAnalysis feature will go over your game and let you know where you screwed up. The Sureshot GPS retails for £215 a pop.

CSR? BlueCore7 single chip solution combines low energy Bluetooth, GPS and FM Radio

CSR BlueCore7 single chip solution

Ultra low power Bluetooth chip solution obviously isn't enough for CSR? They can do more, handset makers and ultimately end-users want more. Hence, they're launching their seventh generation BlueCore silicon (BlueCore7), which integrates Bluetooth v2.1+EDR, Bluetooth low energy, eGPS (enhanced Global Positioning System), and FM transmit and receive technologies on a single chip. Best of all, BlueCore7 allows the Bluetooth and FM radios to work without interference, "either independently or together to allow users to stream FM radio from a handset to a pair of Bluetooth headphones."

Why do we care about it? Think smaller handsets, or even better think existing handsets with batteries that last much longer. Sounds promising where in my book. Now, we have to sit and wait for the first phone makers to license the technology and start implementing it in their products. Which we'll hopefully see launched this year…

Robotic Teddy Bear with GPS

Robotic Teddy Bear with GPS

While some of us place plush toys on the dashboard as a form of decoration in our vehicles, engineers from iXs Research Corporation have managed to cram in a GPS navigation unit into a robotic teddy bear, functioning as a talking car navigation system instead. This prototype plush robot measures approximately 1 foot tall and features half a dozen joints in both its arms and neck in order to make the relevant gestures when dispensing spoken directions. Interestingly enough, it also comes with an alcohol detection sensor embedded in its neck, confronting the driver when it picks up the scent of booze. Stroking the head will cause it to gush information on nearby landmarks as well. There is no word on when this will be manufactured on a large scale basis, but I will definitely line up for one when that fateful day comes.

Apple?s 3G iPhone to be thinner - next-generation iPhone will have GPS and be 22% thinner?!

iPhone thinnerIf Leander Kahney is to be believed, the next-generation iPhone will be 22% thinner. Kahney cites "a programmer at a major software publisher," in his speculation that the 3G iPhone will launch with a considerable bit of girth shaved off from the current generation iPhone.

The 3G iPhone is said to not only sport integrated GPS, better battery time than the current-gen iPhone, and a whopping 16GB or 32GB of storage, but will apparently pack all that goodness in to a casing that's 22% less thick than the iPhone currently in millions of pockets. It's not clear if the new iPhone can achieve longer battery life with the 3G radio enabled or if the longer uptime can only be attained with the 3G radio disabled.

Remember, Apple (Steve Jobs) said that 3G was not an option for the first iPhone because of battery life concerns. So, speculation of better battery life raises the question of just how Apple managed to overcome the 3G radio's power consumption issues.

There's also mention of Apple allowing the iPhone to be sold with a subsidy. The speculation that Apple will be giving carriers the opportunity to sell the next-generation iPhone at a discounted price point is rooted in UBS Investment Research's claims that the 3G iPhone could sell for around $200 in the UK.

If the new iPhone launches with real-deal GPS, video conferencing, longer uptime and massive storage, we'd be more than happy. Now, if Apple does all that while shaving off almost one-fourth of the iPhone's thickness, well, you can color us impressed.

Note: The image above is a mock-up, showing the relative size of a 22% thinner iPhone.

New Apple iPhone patent covers everything, hints at GPS and video conferencing, credits Steve Jobs with inventing iPhone

In a massive 371-page patent filing, Apple has filed for patent rights on almost every aspect of the iPhone's UI and functions. The USPTO has just published the patent application and it looks like Apple's aiming for long-run success with the iPhone - with Steve Jobs taking credit for inventing the iPhone.

The recently published patent filing not only mentions functions that we're used to playing with on the current-generation iPhone, but it also makes references to features and functions that could possibly show up in a future iteration of the iPhone (3G iPhone?).

Among the more interesting tidbits from the verbose filing is Apple's patent for a "Touch Screen Device" that sports integrated GPS, an "optical sensor" for video conferencing, and possibly even a physical "click wheel," a la the iPod (Classic). We're already hearing that the 3G iPhone will indeed launch with GPS hardware built-in and there's even speculation that the new iPhone will feature a front-facing video-call camera - all of which agrees quite conveniently with the patent application.

Apple mentions GPS and video conferencing in iPhone patent application

But, the patent application doesn't end there. Filling out the rest of the 371-page patent, Apple makes mention of additional software features that we can only hope will make it in to the 3G iPhone. iPhone users have lamented Apple's decision to leave out features like MMS picture and video messaging, video/audio capture, instant messaging, and Java software from the current-generation iPhone. So, Apple's mention of such features in the patent filing gives us hope that Apple will finally be bringing those sorely missing capabilities to the next-generation iPhone.

The patent application also hints at the possibility of native Quicktime and Flash media playback through the iPhone's Safari browser. Interestingly, the mention of Flash in the patent application seems to be at odds with Apple's unwillingness (at this point) to give Adobe more extensive iPhone SDK access. Adobe needs to be able to create browser plug-ins to make native, browser-based Flash playback a reality, but Apple is keeping browser plug-ins off-limits for now.

And, to give more credence to the recent discovery that the iPhone OS 2.0 firmware will support geo-tagging of pictures, the patent application mentions the use of GPS hardware to append location-data to other applications.

There are enough 3G iPhone-related rumors out there to keep us busy for the next week or so, but it's good to see that Apple is seriously considering putting highly sought-after and rumored features in to future iPhone iterations. We'll be keeping an eye out come next week when Steve Jobs is expected to headline the WWDC Keynote speech with the next-generation iPhone in hand.
