Sprint Mogul pre-release ROM adds GPS support!

Sprint Mogul ROM leaked - enables GPS on Sprint Mogul HTC TitanThere’s nothing worse than owning something that you’re not allowed, or unable, to use. Imagine this - you buy a handset that has GPS and EVDO Rev. A hardware inside, but you just aren’t able to make use of those features.

Well, owners of Sprint Mogul Windows Mobile smartphones don’t have to kick their imagination into high gear on this one - those guys are actually living with crippled handsets as we speak. But, there’s good news.

It seems that a pre-release build (read: based on the official Sprint Mogul ROM) of the new Sprint Mogul ROM has been leaked to the public. The new ROM brings the dormant GPS receiver to life, allowing to to be used to grab positional data from Google Maps. The leaked pre-release follows on Sprint’s announcement that a new Sprint Mogul ROM would be made available in early Q1 2008.

Sprint Mogul ROM leaked - enables GPS on Sprint Mogul HTC Titan

Unfortunately, the leaked ROM lacks EVDO Rev. A support. Inside sources are saying that the feature is in the final stages of development. The final version of the new Sprint Mogul ROM should enable your Sprint Mogul to rock both the GPS and EVDO Rev. A hardware that has been quietly biding its time within the handset.

We’re looking for a March release-window for the updated Sprint Mogul ROM. If you just can’t wait to get a crack at that GPS goodness within your Sprint Mogul, flash your handset with the pre-release build. The ROM installer is buggy and will likely fail a few times before you get the ROM working, so make sure you read the entire thread before proceeding - and make sure you know what you’re doing.

RIM BlackBerry 8110 Pearl headed to Rogers Wireless with GPS?

Rogers to get RIM BlackBerry 8110 Pearl with GPS in Deep BlueCanadian BlackBerry-fans may just have reason to celebrate in the near future. We’re hearing that the GPS-toting RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8110 could be hitting Rogers Wireless’s network in the near-term. As the GSM counterpart to the CDMA-based BlackBerry 8130 Pearl, the BlackBerry 8110 Pearl features an integrated GPS receiver.

The updated GSM BlackBerry Pearl should be sporting the microSD card slot, revised keypad, 3.5 mm headphone jack, and the integrated GPS receiver that we’ve come to expect from the newer BlackBerry Pearls.

Dark Blue seems to be the color of choice for the Rogers-flavor of the BlackBerry 8110 Pearl, and keep in mind that the $249.99 price-tag is dependent upon a data plan and a 3-year contract.

Supa has a new GPS navigation system in town - the S1200G. This device can be hooked up to a special cradle that comes with its own SIM card as well as a separate rechargeable battery. The S1200G is powered by a Freescale MX21 266Mhz processor and Microsoft's Windows CE 5.0 operating system, bringing together a 4.3? touch screen display, the fabled SiRFStar III receiver, a 1300mAh Li-Polymer battery, and an SD memory card slot. No idea what the GSM cradle is meant for, but a missing microphone shows that the S1200G was not meant to make phone calls. There is also no word on whether Supa's S1200G will hit the US market - only time will be able to tell.

GPS Security And Privacy - Pros Vs Cons

As you may well be aware, there are many important benefits to consider when using the Global Positioning Satellite System (GPS). It is invaluable when trying to navigate in unfamiliar areas, but some people think it is an invasion of privacy. Security and privacy have been openly debated, and most adults believe that it is more beneficial than detrimental.

GPS tracking devices can provide monitoring data on a vehicle such as total miles driven, speeds that it was driven, traveled routes, as well as its current location. The sophistication and quantity of available monitored data varies depending upon the system and the make and model of the GPS device and vehicle of installation.

This is also widely regarded as an invasion of our personal privacy. To give one example, a standard rental car contract will often stipulate that if you go over 79 miles per hour, you will have to pay extra for the wear and tear that the car suffers. The car rental company can find out if you are going too fast by receiving information from the GPS tracking devices that are attached to the vehicle. Thus, if you go over 79 miles per hour, they will know, and you will be billed.

Frequently, parents believe that GPS security and privacy issues are minimal in comparison with the security of knowing the location of their child. In fact, some parents use GPS devices to monitor their child's location and activities. If their child fails to follow the parents' guidelines, these parents may opt to suspend driving and socialization privileges.

GPS cell phones no longer require people to purchase expensive hardware to track a loved one. Cell phone companies now offer this option. However most cell phones do not offer the user direct access to the GPS data. Accurate location determination requires the assistance of the wireless network, and the GPS data is transmitted only if a 911 emergency call is made.

Cellphones raise lots of privacy issues. Consumers are often not aware that their movements are recorded and tracked. Global Positioning Systems (GPS) reveal a person's location. This type of location data helps police with their investigations, such as tracking down a criminal or even someone who is lost or missing. They can act as a safety device to protecting your family and loved ones. Location technology also helps locate stolen cars. The technology for these tracking devices is constantly improving. However, there is some potential that tracking data can be misused.

Autor: Brad Seabourne

As many of you already know, the Global Positioning Satellite System has a number of major benefits. It can be of huge assistance to those navigating in unfamiliar territory. But some people consider it to be an invasion of privacy. GPS security and privacy, has been widely discussed. GPS vehicle tracking devices can provide monitoring data, such as total miles driven, speeds that it was driven, traveled routes, as well as its current location. The benefit of GPS cell phones is that, with this technology there is no need of buying expensive equipment to monitor a loved one.

Toshiba Portg G710 coming to Vodafone Germany as the VDA GPS

VDA GPSWe’ve already seen what’s Toshiba up to. One of the devices spotted includes the monoblock Portg G710, which is heading to Vodafone Germany as VDA GPS. As you probably already know, it’s the quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE Windows Mobile 6 smartphone that also sports such goodies as Bluetooth, GPS, full QWERTY keyboard, and the 2 megapixel camera. On the down side, it lacks 3G and WiFi connectivity support, making it kinda strange buying choice, especially for corporate customers. However, the G710’s weaknesses may make the device more affordable — not that we know how much it will cost, nor when exactly it will be released.

Panasonic CN-MP50D GPS system

Panasonic CN-MP50D GPS system

If you have trouble finding your way around, perhaps it is time to invest in a GPS navigation system. The Panasonic CN-MP50D GPS system isn't any good in the US though, as its 2GB SD card comes pre-loaded with essential phone numbers and map information of 10 million points of interest in Japan. It will hit the Japanese market this February 12th for approximately $650 after conversion. Strange thing it lacks audio and video playback though - that's like taking a few steps backwards compared to other GPS systems these days that seem to function more and more like PMPs. No idea if it will ever make it Stateside, but keep yourself occupied with the specifications below in the meantime.

  • Touch screen LCD display (272 x 480 pixels)

  • SD memory card slot

  • 4 hour battery life

  • Memory storage for places up to 10 genres

Mio kinda mimics Samsung?s approach to phones - one side phone, other side GPS

Mio GPS phone

You’ve probably already heard a number of stories that pure portable navigation devices (PND) are bound to die in the coming years. So it doesn’t surprises the leading PND manufacturers want to get into the handset market and release either its software for the popular smartphone platforms (something TomTom and Garmin already did) or even make their own GPS-equipped devices. That being said, Navigadget spotted the Mio’s upcoming GPS equipped phone at this year’s CES.

Similarly to Samsung’s approach with the UpStage (B’Phone), the device pictured above has two faces. But unlike the UpStage which reserves one face for music and the other for phone, Mio’s device puts navigation instead of music. The end result is large screen navigation device that’s also the mobile phone. Cool approach, don’t you think?

Finally, in case you’re wondering, we’ve no idea when the Mio GPS phone will be available nor which markets it will target…

Michelin Exits the Consumer GPS Market

Michelin Exits the Consumer GPS Market

If I say “Michelin”, you think “Tires”, right? Well, that resumes why Michelin is exiting the consumer GPS Market. While you might think that this sector is technology-driven, it is not really - at least, not in the entry-level market. GPS devices have reached the point of being “good enough” and most people couldn’t care less about gimmicks like multimedia features.

However, like any commodity, branding still plays a major role in selling the products (yes, just like soap) and Michelin never built a GPS brand that did resonate with consumers. I guess that the company thought that its foothold on the “auto’ market was good enough. It wasn’t.

Berg Insight: GPS-enabled handset shipments to reach 560 million units in 2012

Berg InsightAccording to a new research report by Berg Insight, global shipments of GPS-enabled handsets is expected to grow from 175 million units in 2007 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.% to reach 560 million units in 2012. Rapid adoption of GPS technology in mass-market GSM/WCDMA handsets will be the main driver. “Last year marked the breakthrough for GPS outside the CDMA-market with successful product launches by Nokia, HTC and others”, commented Andr Malm, telecom analyst, Berg Insight. “This year we expect to see an abundance of new models supporting GPS from all major brands. By 2009, GPS is going to be a must-have in all high-end handsets.”

Berg Insight believes that the increasing penetration for GPS in GSM/WCDMA handsets will trigger a wave of innovations in the field of location-based services. “The availability of accurate position data in mobile devices creates exciting new opportunities for developers of local search, navigation and social networking applications”, said Mr Malm. “Nokia and Google will be two of the foremost players in this arena but there is a good chance that the development will also give birth to the next Facebook or MySpace.”

SONY Nav-U series: the elegant GPS with dual view

NV-U83T: elegant GPS with dual view

[CES 2008] Sony unveiled its new Nav-U line (models NV-U73T and NV-U83T) last Sunday during the CES press conference. We had the opportunity to take a closer look at it today and we liked it: the sleek and elegant design is backed up by interesting technical features like the dual view (see photo). Users can see a location in details, which is useful when you remember a place only by the surrounding point of interests.

When the GPS signal is weak the POSITION Plus feature provides a more accurate estimation of the positioning. It includes a pressure sensor, gyro sensor and an acceleration sensor (most competitors do not have these sensors to help the position estimation)

We did not take the Nav-U for a ride, so we do not know how it feels in the real world.

Available in early spring, pre-orders are now being accepted at www.sonystyle.com/navu

Pricing: NV-U73T $350 and NV-U83T $500

BlueStar Distributes Motorola MC70 with New Integrated GPS Functionality

BlueStar recently announced that it is distributing the flagship Motorola (News - Alert) MC70 Enterprise Digital Assistant with new integrated GPS functionality.

MC70 is a handheld mobile device that incorporates a mobile phone, PDA, computer, scanner and imager in a single unit. The device combines multi-mode wireless networking, voice and data communications and advanced data capture in an enterprise productivity tool that can support nearly any application in any environment.

According to BlueStar officials, now with new location capabilities, Motorola's MC70 is connecting people and products to information resources.

Officials explained that the support for GSM/EDGE cellular networks delivers global coverage, fast wireless data speeds that enable rich applications, and enterprise-level security.

In addition, the integrated GPS functionality enables the enterprise to locate drivers, re-route delivery workers, find missing devices anywhere in the enterprise, provide vehicle navigation, and more.

Greg Seelbach, director of market development at BlueStar, pointed out that GPS is one of the hottest trends in the mobile computing, because it provides many technical advantages ranging from turn-by-turn directions for the user to the enterprise being able to automate the dispatch of its field workers.

?Integrating GPS technology in the Motorola MC70, which is becoming one of the most popular mobile computers sold by this industry, means this GPS-enabled model is all but guaranteed success,? he added.

BlueStar is a solutions-based distributor of point-of-sale, bar coding, data collection, radio frequency identification (RFID), and wireless mobility products. BlueStar works exclusively with VAR Partners, and provides them with complete solutions.

In October, Motorola Inc. had introduced the new version of MC70, featuring integrated GPS capability. According to Motorola, the GPS option allows organizations with field-based employees, such as postal companies, to track and manage real-time tasking, as well as verify specific locations of activities and provide mobile workers with pinpoint navigation support to improve location-based productivity.
